Exhibition Street Theatre Precinct streetscape improvements

City of Melbourne is revitalising the live theatre district on Exhibition Street - giving thousands of theatre-goers more room to move.

We're delivering upgraded footpaths, new trees, a safer bike lane and bigger pedestrian spaces from Little Lonsdale Street to Bourke Street.

This project is supported through the Melbourne City Recovery Fund – a $100 million partnership of the Victorian Government and City of Melbourne.

Works started in February 2024 and are expected to be complete by mid-2024.

The scope of the works includes:

                    • Creating a wider footpath with new bluestone pavers.
                    • Installing garden beds with plants and trees, providing shade and helping to create a cooler environment.
                    • Upgrading the existing bike lane with separation islands and raised sections to make it safer for all road users.
                    • Installing new street furniture such as seats, bike hoops and bluestone blocks.
                    • Upgrading the stormwater drains and irrigation system.
                    • Installing new electrical power outlets.
                    • Increasing the number of parking/drop off bays in front of Marriott Hotel, Comedy Theatre and Rydges Hotel.
                    • Converting the parklet in front of Her Majesty's Theatre into a short term bus drop off bay.

                    Impacts while works are underway:

                    • The construction hours are 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work required - pedestrian, traffic and bike riding access will be maintained during the day.
                    • Occasional night works and temporary road closures will be required to complete drainage upgrades and road resurfacing. Traffic management and detours will be in place guide road users around the work zone.
                    • Access to driveways and businesses will be maintained during the day, but may be impacted during night works - please speak to the traffic controllers on-site if you require assistance with access.
                    • Some parking bays will be occupied by the work zone and equipment.
                    • Noise and dust is to be expected.
