                    We have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Lime (formerly JUMP bikes) for a one-year trial of an electric bike share service, with the bikes available to book through the Uber or Lime app.

                    ​​​​The MOU includes City of Port Phillip and City of Yarra and establishes a framework for Lime to operate in Melbourne, supporting the safe use of e-bikes and protecting the amenity of our streets. View the MOU:

                    The service area covers parts of the Melbourne, Yarra and Port Phillip local government areas.

                    We chose to partner with Lime bikes to encourage cycling in the city and reduce transport emissions and congestion. Lime will be responsible for all aspects of the operation of the service. The trial will allow us to understand how the bikes are being used and make sure the service is working for the community.

                    Lime is a registered COVID-19 safe business and is following government advice by frequently cleaning and sanitising all bikes with an extra focus on frequently touched areas. The bikes are regularly cleaned in the Lime warehouse and around the city to keep you safe.

                    Will Lime e-bikes be cleaned regularly?

                    ​Yes, Lime is a registered COVID-19 safe business frequently cleaning and sanitising all bikes with an extra focus on frequently touched areas. The bikes are regularly cleaned in the Lime warehouse and around the city to keep you safe.

                    Do I have to wear a helmet when riding a Lime electric bike?

                    Yes, helmets will be provided with the bikes. The same road rules apply with electric bikes as regular bikes. You are required to wear a helmet at all times and could be fined by Victoria Police if you fail to do so.

                    Will Lime e-bike helmets be cleaned regularly?

                    ​Yes, Lime e-bike helmets and the bikes will be cleaned and sanitised every few days both around the streets and in the Lime warehouse.

                    How do I borrow a Lime bike?

                    ​You can borrow a Lime bike by downloading the Uber or Lime app. There’s a QR code on each bike that you can scan via the app to borrow that bike. As part of the booking process, you’ll get in-app instructions about how to safely use and park the bike.

                    How do I find the nearest Lime bike?

                    ​You’ll be able to see via the Uber or Lime app where your nearest Lime bike is located.

                    How fast do Lime electric bikes go?

                    ​The bikes are designed to travel up to 25 kilometres per hour. If you are using an electric bike, you are required to behave in accordance with the Victorian Road Rules, ride safely and respect the bikes and other road users.

                    How do I report a problem or concern about a Lime electric bike?

                    You can contact the Lime customer service centre on 1800 861 305 or submit a request online.

                    What happens if I ride a Lime electric bike outside the City of Melbourne, City of Yarra, City of Port Phillip area?

                    ​Lime e-bikes are not allowed to travel outside the City of Melbourne, City of Yarra and City of Port Phillip.  If you ride a Lime bike outside of these areas, you may receive a penalty charge.

                    Where can I park a Lime electric bike?

                    ​Think of others when you park and be aware of no-parking areas shown in the app. It’s best to lock your bike to a public bike rack, but if none are available then park it in an upright position on the kerbside leaving at least 1.5 metres from any building.  If you do park in a non-parking area you may be charged a penalty by Lime and their staff will need to relocate the bike.

                    ​The good news is Lime bikes are easy to ride and because they’re electric, it doesn’t matter if you’re not super fit. But it’s important to be know and understand the road rules and be alert. You can find out the road rules on the VicRoads website.

                    Do I have to wear a helmet when riding a JUMP electric bike?

                    ​Yes, you are required to wear a helmet at all times when riding a bicycle in Victoria and could be fined by Victoria Police if you fail to do so. Helmets are available with every bike. If the helmet is missing, please report this to Jump via the app and the bike will be taken offline.

                    What happens if I ride a JUMP electric bike outside the City of Melbourne, City of Yarra, City of Port Phillip area?

                    How fast do JUMP electric bikes go?

                    ​The bikes have an electric motor, which assists the rider while pedalling at up to 25 kilometres per hour. As well as riding in accordance with the Victorian Road Rules, be mindful of riding with care and in consideration of other bikes and road users.

                    What happens if a JUMP bike is vandalised or dumped?

                    We encourage all Melburnians to act responsibly and respect the JUMP bikes placed around the city. We have identified a number of No Parking Zones and Jump staff will relocate bikes incorrectly parked in these areas.

                    JUMP and Good Cycles are responsible for maintaining and replacing damaged or vandalised bikes and we expect a quick response if issues arise. Uber can also fine those found to be incorrectly using the bikes.

                    The City of Melbourne’s MOU with JUMP outlines strict resolution timeframes which need to be met. The 12 month trial includes quarterly evaluation, and if the scheme is found not to be working well it can be cancelled at any time.

                    How are JUMP bikes charged?

                    ​The JUMP bikes need batteries to be changed every few days. This will be done by Good Cycles, a social enterprise that works with young people aged 18-24 experiencing disadvantage across Melbourne and its surrounds. Good Cycles will also be responsible for the general maintenance of the bikes.

                    How many JUMP bikes are there?

                    Initially there are a total of 400 JUMP bikes, which will increase to a total of 1000 in the coming weeks.

                    Why are you partnering with JUMP bikes?

                    ​Our Transport Strategy 2030 calls for Melbourne to be Australia’s premier bicycle city and supports the use of electric bikes to increase bike riding.
