                    Tree Policy

Council manages over 80,000 trees in the public realm and has a target of doubling the canopy cover in the municipality by 2040.

We consider our trees to be an important city infrastructure asset; therefore all management options will be explored and exhausted before tree removal is recommended. The ability to maximise planting and greening opportunities will be considered when reviewing planning applications.

Before any tree can be removed, a site inspection and arboricultural assessment of the tree is conducted to determine the validity of the removal request. All reasonable tree risk management controls will be considered to ensure public tree risk is within the City of Melbourne’s accepted range. This may include immediate tree removal.
