Declared a park in 1873 and covering an area of approximately 39 hectares, Princes Park stretches for 1.5 km along Royal Parade in Carlton North and forms part of one of the most important gateways into central Melbourne.

Princes Park features several sports and recreation grounds and is headquarters to the Carlton Football Club. Over the years, a variety of community sporting facilities have been created including the two 1938 Art Deco sporting pavilions on Royal Parade. The park also hosts a variety of sporting clubs including lawn bowls, cricket and soccer, and includes tennis facilities.

Other facilities in the park include playgrounds, barbecues, picnic facilities and toilets. It also features significant large trees, including avenues of elms and Moreton Bay fig trees.
