Princes Park

Declared a park in 1873 and covering an area of approximately 39 hectares, Princes Park stretches for 1.5 km along Royal Parade in Carlton North and forms part of one of the most important gateways into central Melbourne.

Princes Park features several sports and recreation grounds and is headquarters to the Carlton Football Club. Over the years, a variety of community sporting facilities have been created including the two 1938 Art Deco sporting pavilions on Royal Parade. The park has tennis facilities and hosts a variety of sporting clubs including lawn bowls, cricket and soccer.

Other facilities in the park include playgrounds, barbecues, picnic facilities and toilets. It also features significant large trees, including avenues of elms and Moreton Bay fig trees.  

Things to do

  • Take a walk or jog around the perimeter jogging track, visiting the four outdoor exercise stations along the way. 
  • Visit the playgrounds on the eastern boundary. The playground on Princes Park Drive has barbecues, picnic facilities and a toilet adjacent. 
  • Have a picnic by the lake in the north of the park.
  • Let your dog run in the designated off-leash areas.
  • Visit Ikon Park, the headquarters of the Carlton Football ClubOpens in new tab and watch a game of Australian Rules Football.
  • Explore the many sporting clubs including lawn bowls, cricket and tennis.

Playgrounds

Princes Park North Playground is a small playground featuring rockers, swings and a seesaw.

Princes Park South Playground is larger playground featuring a multi-level platform structure for older kids, sandplay area with cubbies, slides and swings.
