There are many small parks and green spaces across the City of Melbourne – including suburban reserves, street parks and squares. This page lists these neighbourhood parks by suburb, with basic details of their space, location and facilities.

Description: This neighbourhood square sits adjacent to Carlton’s Italian heartland of Lygon Street. Here the Piazza ItaliaOpens in new tab with its open meeting/events space, a bocce court and stage sits alongside shady walkways, shrub beds and plenty of benches to soak up the sun. In spring, a carpet of bluebells flower beneath the elm trees.

Description: A small local park consisting of grass and shrub beds, surrounding a community centre housed in the historic heritage-classified chapel built in 1881. It is a rare example in Victoria from the 19th century of a multi-denominational chapel.

Description: This neighbourhood square is just over a hectare in size and includes open grassy areas as well as shady trees, the Bali MemorialOpens in new tab and a playground. Less obvious are the underground water tanks installed to catch storm water and mitigate future floods.

Description: This local square is listed with the National Trust of State historical and architectural importance, as one of the most intact squares from an important phase of urban improvement initiated by the Surveyor-General Andrew Clarke. Gazetted in 1873.

Location: 174-176 Palmerston Street

Description: This neighbourhood linking space between Lygon and Rathdowne streets has been transformed into a park for the Carlton community. This redeveloped area now includes two sports courts, a community square, a table tennis table and informal areas for sitting and relaxing. There are also new trees, plants, lawns, lights, bins and pathways.

Description: Small local park featuring peaceful grassy reserve and some shrub beds. There is a beautiful scarlet oak at the north end.

Description: This neighbourhood linking space between Palmerston Street and Elgin Street features an open grassy area adjacent to three large items of play equipment. Some shrub beds.

Location: 190-192 Pelham Street, Carlton

Description: Gifted to the City of Melbourne from the University of Melbourne in 2001, this neighbourhood square provides a unique combination of paved and green spaces. This exciting new landscape provides a focal point for tens of thousands of visitors to the educational precinct. Metro Tunnel works have impacted the complete refurbishment of this site.

Description: A neighbourhood linear park of shady trees and grass adjacent to Melbourne Cemetery.

Description: A local reserve at the end of Adela Lane consisting of shrub beds and seating with great views across the Yarra River.

Location: 898 Collins Street, Docklands

Description: This local park was named in 2014 to reflect the geographical heritage of the area. Buluk means 'wetlands' in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people. The park has an open grassy square surrounded by shady oak trees, and is great for parents and children visiting the library or community hub at The Dock, which are both adjacent.

Location: 835-837 Collins Street, Docklands

Description: This regional open space consists of a commercial vessel transfer pontoon on the Yarra, surrounded by a small park with lawn, shrub beds and trees. The artwork 'The River Runs Through ItOpens in new tab' by Mark Stoner is well worth viewing.

Location: 80 Harbour Esplanade, Docklands

Description: This local park features sports courts, outdoor gym equipment, a table tennis table, open grassy areas, some shade and the 2015 M Pavilion surrounded by garden beds. This is a popular place for weekday workers at lunchtime. The sculpture titled 'Continuum' by the artist Michael Snape is at the Bourke Street end.

Description: A small local park that features some grass and three majestic palm trees. The park also includes the artwork 'Raising the Rattler Pole', a theatrical tribute to the W-class 'rattler' tram.

Description: A local park with a large grassy space and feature rock walls and shrub beds opposite The District shopping centre.

Description: A local park beside the harbour with spectacular views of the city. Look out for the sculptural installation 'SilenceOpens in new tab' by Adrian Mauriks which was installed in 2003. At the eastern end of the promenade is 'Monument ParkOpens in new tab' by Callum Morton.

Description: This regional park incorporates water sensitive urban design features and offers picnic and barbecue facilities. Facing the Yarra River, the park has amazing views to the city and has both open grassy areas and sheltered areas. It is a popular location for residents and visitors.

Description: A small local park featuring a grassy rectangle surrounded by trees and shrub beds. A quiet place to sit and eat your lunch or read a book.

Description: A neighbourhood park adjacent to the Yarra River, Ron Barassi Senior Park is a community recreational and sporting facility. The park features a sports field as well as an open grassy area, shrub beds and young trees. The park is named in recognition of Ronald James Barassi Senior, who played for the Melbourne Football Club from 1936 to 1940.

Description: This local open space is an enclosed grassy area surrounded by shrub beds, a coffee shop, playground and picnic areas. Adjacent to the Docklands Community Garden.

Description: A regional open space on the south side of Victoria Harbour with great views to the Bolte Bridge and various boat harbours, as well as the buildings at New Quay.

Location: 36 Cumberland Street, Docklands

Description: This plaza is part of Victoria Harbour Promenade and is a small grassy area with a large rose bed adjacent. Next to it is a pergola with barbecues, some seating and a drinking fountain underneath. A lovely place to sit and watch the boating activity in Victoria Harbour.

Description: This small local park is part of Yarra's Edge River Esplanade. It is an open grassy area with trees and shrub beds making it an ideal picnic location. The ropes and poles playground is particularly suited to older children.

Location: 1-33 Parliament Place, East Melbourne

Description: This small local reserve is known for the 'Great PetitionOpens in new tab' artwork which was created in 2008 to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of women's right to vote in Victoria. The artwork, fabricated in rolled steel and painted in parchment white, is a contemporary reading of the 'Monster Petition', a giant petition of 30,000 signatures offered to the Victorian Parliament in 1891 as evidence of widespread support for equal voting rights for women.

​Location: 1-41 Darling Street, East Melbourne

Description: In 1880 Darling Square was reserved as a site for recreation and convenience for the people by the Victorian Government by John Gavan Duffy. Recent works have seen the installation of an innovative stormwater harvesting project to irrigate Darling Square and Powlett Reserve. The local park is laid out in a formal fashion with crossed paths and large shady trees.

Description: Created in 1999 for the 20th anniversary of Melbourne's sister city relationship with Tianjin. Planned by designers from Tianjin, this small local park contains a water garden and a traditional pavilion.

​Location: 74-108 Spring Street, East Melbourne

Description: This local reserve was created in 1863. It contains the Stanford FountainOpens in new tab, built and designed by the then Pentridge prisoner William Stanford and erected in 1870; the Gordon of Khartoum statueOpens in new tab erected in 1889 and the Adam Lindsay Gordon MemorialOpens in new tab, erected in 1932. The five Canary Island palms were planted and the chain link fence was installed in the early 1900s. The underground women’s toilet was constructed in 1924.

Description: The former site of Council horse stables and works depot, this local linear reserve is an open grassy area bordered by huge pine trees to the south and the railway line to the north.

​Location: 489-531 Albert Street, East Melbourne

Description: This local triangular park is a pleasant respite at the Spring Street end of town, with views of Parliament House, Eastern Hill and St Patrick's Cathedral. One of the garden's main features is a 2007 bronze sculpture of Pastor Sir Douglas and Lady Gladys NichollsOpens in new tab, two of Australia's most prominent Aboriginal leaders. Relax on the grass beneath the palm trees beside Parliament House. Cool off on a hot day by walking inside the cascading water of the Coles FountainOpens in new tab, erected in 1981.

Location: 72-74 Grey Street, East Melbourne

Description: Prior to the site being reserved in 1919 for a municipal park, gardens and children's playground, it was previously a site reserved for a military parade ground and other military purposes from 1884. Interestingly it has been used for a ladies cricket club and a ladies hockey club, among other sporting clubs. Of interest is the gentlemen’s shelter which is a single storey brick structure built in 1938, now home to the East Melbourne Group.

Description: Designed in the Greek Revival style by Leighton Irwin and Roy K Stephenson, this building was opened in 1935. In 1937 the building was awarded the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects' Street Architecture Medal. The surrounding small local space is a pleasant place to relax and enjoy your lunch.

Location: ​St Andrews Place, East Melbourne

Description: A small local reserve with a grassed area which includes the 2018 sculpture ‘Taken not Given’ by Anne Ross in the southern section. This artwork remembers the mothers and children who were separated by forced adoption policies and practices.

In 2022 the Family Violence Memorial was installed. This Memorial is defined by a field of purple flowers that bloom year-round – symbolic of the global movement to end family violence.​

​Location: Victoria Parade, East Melbourne

Description: Sandwiched between Victoria Parade to the south and the tramlines to the north, this linear reserve is shaded by a row of very old elm trees.

​Location: 1-61 Wellington Parade, East Melbourne

Description: Named after Sir Henry Weedon who was Lord Mayor from 1905 to 1908, this reserve is composed of several areas of turf divided by Wellington Parade. It is planted with eucalypts and elm trees and palms. The memorial to motorcyclist Harold ParsonsOpens in new tab was relocated here in 1989.

Description: A local linear park sandwiched between Wellington Parade South and the railway line to the north. The grass is dotted with shady trees and seats.

Description: A local park with an open grassy area suitable for ball games and an adjacent playground and picnic area. A large eucalyptus tree dominates the road side of the park.

Description: Locally known as Skinny Park, this small local reserve has a grassy area beside the railway line that is dominated by a recently installed railway themed playground that is very popular.

Location: 160 Rankins Road, Kensington

Description: A park ex​pansion project has doubled the size of the available green space in this area beside the Kensington Railway Station. Two large eucalyptus trees are a central feature of this small local reserve.

Description: An open grassy local reserve adjacent to the former Kensington Town Hall. To the north is the Flemington War Memorial and two flagpoles and to the south is a children’s swing.

Description: A riverside regional open space that runs from Hobsons Road downstream to Footscray Road.

Description: A local reserve with an open grassy area suitable for ball games adjacent to a large playground.

Description: A municipal reserve that contains a sports ground, the Flemington-Kensington Bowls Club and a small sports pavilion. There are also some open areas for passive recreation.

Description: A small local reserve with several large trees and an open grassy area adjacent to a small playground.

Description: Lots of large old peppercorn trees which are remnants from the old stock route completely shade this small local park. It is a cool place on a hot day.

Description: Large multi-use open neighbourhood park with areas of saltmarsh, large shady gum trees and shrub beds. The Kensington Banks tennis courts are booked through the Kensington Community Recreation CentreOpens in new tab.

Description: This is a small local reserve with a playground and a shaded picnic table and some open grass.

​Location: 1-9 Cuffe Walk, Kensington

Description: This local heritage linear reserve follows the old stock route through Kensington. You can still see the old fences, peppercorn trees and other features to do with the history of the area. Information boards are at the Racecourse Road end of the reserve and there are a series of mosaic artworksOpens in new tab beneath the Epsom Road underpass.

Description: This local linear park makes clever use of the steep site and features shady trees and dense plantings. There is a small grassy area adjacent to the playground.

Description: A local reserve of grass surrounded by trees and shrub beds that connects to the Stock Route Reserve. A half basketball court is on the western side.

​Location: 69-81 Epsom Road, Kensington

Description: The concept of the Women’s Peace Garden, a local park, came from an idea developed during the International Year of Peace in 1986. The site was originally a holding pen for stock travelling the stock route but is now an open area of grass surrounded by shrubs in the colours of purple, white and green: the colours of the women’s movement.

Description: This linear park runs beside the Yarra from Princes Bridge upstream to Morell Bridge. It is the strip of turf and trees between Boatshed Drive and Alexandra Avenue that contains the popular riverside barbecues and picnic tables.

Location: 2A Spencer Street, Melbourne

Description: On the Yarra's northern bank, bordered by Spencer Street to the west, King Street to the east and the railway viaduct to the north: Batman Park is named after one of Melbourne's founding fathers, John Batman. Planted with a variety of trees, the park was established in 1982 on the site of a disused freight train rail yard.

Description: A paved open public space, featuring rock sculptures and the Facing Heaven Archway a gift from Jiangsu Province to celebrate Victoria's 150th anniversary and installed in 2000.

Description: This small grassed reserve contains the Eight Hour Movement Monument,Opens in new tab designed by Percival Ball to commemorate the Eight Hour Movement initiated in Victoria in 1856. It was initially erected in 1903 in Gordon Reserve and was transferred to this site in 1927. The lawns are popular with students at lunchtime soaking up the sun.

Description: Enterprize Park is named after the schooner Enterprize which carried the first white settlers to Melbourne. The reserve was originally part of Batman Park and features the historical 1850s Turning Basin and timber wharf. It is also the site of the Melbourne Aquarium.

Description: This small local reserve was recently refurbished and features a variety of spring and summer flowering perennial plants beneath an old poplar tree.

Location: 431 Collins Street, Melbourne

Description: This is one of the CBD's newest open spaces. This smoke-free local park featuring lawns, shrub beds and trees is an oasis amidst the bustle of the city. Water-play elements evoke a dry creek bed and the path network and sensory garden spaces including feature specimen trees should encourage nature-based play for children.

Description: The colourful floral logo bed sits in front of a statue of the Marquis of LinlithgowOpens in new tab, Governor of Victoria (1889 to 1895) and Australia s first Governor-General (1901 to 1902). The bronze and granite statue was erected in 1911.

Description: Stretching from Princes Bridge downstream to the Sandridge Rail Bridge alongside the Yarra River, this linear park features shady trees, shrub beds and has access to cafes and Flinders Street Station. Great views of the Yarra River.

Description: The lawns and seats on the west side of the cathedral have long been enjoyed by Melburnians and visitors alike to sit in the afternoon sun and watch the passing parade. The bronze statue of Captain Matthew FlindersOpens in new tab was unveiled in 1925.

Location: Batman Avenue, Melbourne

Description: On the north side of the Yarra River, this linear park stretches from north of the Swan Street Bridge upstream to the Hoddle Bridge. A footpath follows the course of the Yarra River and makes for a pleasant walk. The park was named after Councillor Frank Stapley, a former Lord Mayor.

Description: This small grassed reserve is dominated by three large Moreton Bay Figs.

Description: A small local reserve of open grass surrounded by large shady elm trees.

The reserve is undergoing an expansion program which is due to be completed towards the end of 2024.

Description: A small local reserve of grass with a few trees.

Description: A fenced off-leash grassy local open space for dogs and their owners. Please pick up after your dog and fill any holes they might dig.

Description: A small local link consisting of grass with a few trees.

Description: A small local link with grass and a few trees.

Description: This local reserve is the result of a successful park expansion project. A large area of grass and shaded shrub beds and seating make this a pleasant place to spend an hour or two. Within the reserve is an Edwardian brick substation.

Location: 273-315 Dryburgh Street, North Melbourne

Description: This local reserve was named after James 'Tiger' Gardiner, who helped establish the North Melbourne Football Club in 1869. A wonderful open grassed area perfect for ball games is surrounded by large shady trees. A playground constructed in 2019 is very popular, as are the barbecues and picnic seating. Within the reserve is an Edwardian brick substation.

Description: This re-landscaped park was the subject of a park expansion project which has resulted in a small local reserve which has large trees, some grass, shrub beds and seats.

Description: This neighbourhood park consists of extensive grounds around the community centre, including a large grassy area suitable for ball games, a mini soccer court, two half basketball courts, a half netball court, a playground and community gardens.

Location: 204-206 Arden Street, North Melbourne

Description: This municipal park was first developed in the 1850s as the site for the Hotham Cricket Club and then in 1882 for the Hotham Football Club which in turn became the North Melbourne Football Club in 1888. The grounds around what is affectionately known as the Arden Street Oval, contain a range of sporting facilities as well as shady trees and grass. At the eastern end of the reserve is the North Melbourne Pool.

Description: Named after Sir William Ian Clunies Ross, a former chairman of the CSIRO, this small local grassed reserve is opposite the former Clunies Ross House on Royal Parade.

Location: 12-92 Galada Avenue, Parkville

Description: This neighbourhood reserve has an open grassy area in the north which is great for ball games. To the south is a linear reserve with many trees beside an ephemeral creek, planted with many Australian native plants.

Description: Named after William Ievers, a prominent Melbourne businessman and councillor in the 1800s, this large neighbourhood grassed reserve features some very large eucalyptus trees and a playground.

Description: Running parallel to Park Street, this small local park features a series of open grassed areas and shrub beds planted with Australian plants. Includes seating.

Description: This local reserve surrounds the original Royal Park Hospital built 1910 to 1913 and refurbished for the Commonwealth Games in 2005. The buildings are now private accommodation, but the gardens and Cade Square are available to all.

Description: Running parallel to the Yarra River on its south side; this linear reserve runs from Sandridge Rail Bridge to Evan Walker Bridge and has grassed areas and some trees. A great place to sit and watch the passing parade.

Description: This small local reserve is dominated by an exceptional specimen of a golden elm (Ulmus glabra 'Lutescens') planted here around 1939. A carpet of bluebells appears beneath its branches in spring.

Description: A wildlife corridor beside the Dynon Road Tidal Canal. The City of Melbourne has commenced an ongoing project to rid this reserve of feral plants and replace them with Australian native plants.

Description: Named after Richard Eades, former Lord Mayor, in 1859, this local park has some open grassy areas and shady trees as well as a playground and fitness equipment.

Description: A small local reserve of grass and shrub beds created by a park expansion featuring a very large and shady elm tree in an expanse of grass.

Description: A small local link of lawn shaded by a large elm tree. A decommissioned underground public toilet built in 1938 is of interest; especially the Moderne style polychrome brick ventilation shaft with decorative wrought iron panels.

Description: This small local reserve is the result of a park expansion program commenced in 2010. There are plenty of seats to sit and enjoy the small grassed areas and shrub beds.

Description: A small local link featuring a grassed area including the North Melbourne War Memorial erected in 1926 and a flagpole.

Location: 24-40 Sims Street, West Melbourne

Description: This lightly wooded bitumen bike path follows the Maribyrnong River from Hobsons Road downstream to the Sims Street railway bridge.

Description: A recent park expansion project has resulted in more lawns and trees for people to enjoy at this local park. A skate park has been created beneath the Dynon Road overpass.

Description: A viewing platformOpens in new tab overlooking the railway lines and the old Melbourne goods yard (now referred to as E Gate).

Description: The Port Philip Monument, a basalt obelisk, was erected here in 1941 to commemorate the first landing of Europeans in the Melbourne area. It is positioned at the original junction of the Yarra and Maribyrnong rivers.

Description: A recent park expansion has created a small dog off-leash area beneath large shady trees, as well as new garden beds and footpaths.

Location: 397-435 Dynon Road, West Melbourne

Description: Just over 2.5 ha has been set aside for wildlife beside the tidal canal. A bird hide and viewing platforms enable bird and wildlife spotting and open grass is interspersed with trees and shrub beds. There are also some seats.

Location: 185 Rosslyn Street, West Melbourne

Description: A small local park of grass, shrub beds and trees enclosed on three sides by the building. This little sun trap is a pleasant place to watch the world go by.
