Participation in the Property and Business Census

The City of Melbourne's Property and Business Census occurs across the municipality on an ongoing basis.

This census of all businesses includes the following components:

  • Business Occupancy (including Electoral Roll) update
  • Census of Land Use and Employment (CLUE).

The Business Occupancy update involves the collection of business contact details which include occupier name, mailing address and other contact information. This data is used extensively by City of Melbourne for purposes such as the Melbourne News publication, planning scheme notifications and electoral roll compilation.

CLUE provides a comprehensive information base about economic activity in the municipality. This information is vital for planning our major infrastructure investments, emergency services and disaster management. The information is also made available to assist businesses with their decision making in our rapidly changing city. See Census of Land Use and Employment (CLUE) for more information.

The census generally involves a surveyor visiting businesses during normal operating hours to ask details about their business and premises. In some instances, businesses may also be contacted by phone or email if the required information is not available at the time of our visit.

The participation of all businesses is vital to the success of the census and we appreciate the time and co-operation of businesses in making the information available to our census team.

The City of Melbourne assures all participants that the data collected will adhere to privacy requirements, and published reports and data will not provide any details about individual businesses other than what is publicly available.

We look forward to your business' participation in this important project.
