                    Motorcycle parking

                    Motorcycles parked on pavement
You can park your motorcycle or scooter on the footpath in Melbourne unless signs state otherwise, but you must not cause any type of obstruction.

Did you know there are on-street parking spaces for more than 500 motorbikes in the CBD? When you park in these spaces, you're helping to keep our busy footpaths clear for pedestrians and deliveries.

It’s free to park your bike and no time limits apply.

Parking signs in these areas state ‘Motor cycles only’.

How to park your motorcycle on a footpath

                    Motorcycles parked on a footpath.

You must park your motorbike safely and not obstruct any other use of the footpath.

Move slowly and carefully between the road and the footpath, using the shortest route. Always give way to pedestrians.

                    Position your motorbike at least:

                    • 1.5 metres (one bike length) back from the building line
                    • 0.5 metre (one wheel diameter) back from the kerb.

Your motorbike must not obstruct access to anything on or near the footpath, for example:

                    • parking spaces for people with disability
                    • kerb ramps
                    • taxi zones, bus and tram stops
                    • doorways and entrances
                    • bicycle hoops
                    • parking meters and ticket machines
                    • rubbish bins and post boxes
                    • service access points with covers in the footpath
                    • outdoor dining areas with ‘Footpath Dining Boundary’ markers in the footpath.

In some areas of the CBD, motorcycles must not stop or park on the footpath.

'No stopping' sign indicated motorcycles can't stop or park on the footpath.

Footpaths where you must not stop or park a motorcycle include:

                    • next to any accessible (disability) parking space
