City of Melbourne publishes information about our council and administration activities, and our services and functions are documented. You can request copies of or look at some of these documents - many are free but there is a fee for some.

We keep records of:

  • maintenance on parks and gardens, public facilities, street features and amenities
  • administration and enforcement of local laws and acts
  • work associated with public events and cultural programs
  • land transfers, subdivisions and the history of use of land, roads and lanes
  • capital works, engineering and road network records.

And documents such as:

  • policies, guidelines, manuals and research
  • project and service plans
  • grant application, tenders and tender evaluation material
  • service agreements, contracts, leases and licences
  • permits
  • leases, permits and notices of building and occupancy.

Contact us if you would like to see documents that aren't published on our website.

Where to find information

Council and committees

Anyone can attend open Council and committee meetings.

  • Carlton Community Centre

or access the schedule of upcoming meetings online.

The Audit and Risk Committee considers and makes recommendations to the Council and its management about issues and internal audits. Our advisory committees advise us on matters of importance.

Registers of information

We compile Registers for inspection that you can view. Examples include:

  • submissions under Section 223
  • lists of donations and grants made by Council
  • election campaign donations.

Publications

We publish a number of newsletters, reports and handbooks for residents, businesses and visitors to the city. You can download them from this website or call us for a copy. Some of these publications are available at our public Libraries.

Freedom of information (FOI) applications

The Freedom of Information Act 1982 gives you right of access to documents that we hold. Read more at Freedom of information. If you can't find the document you want, call us before you make an FOI application as you may not need to apply under the Act to get the documents that you want. We can let you know what documents are available for inspection and assist with getting the information you want.
