                    Supporting the Metro Tunnel project

The Metro Tunnel is a major Victorian Government public transport project that will free up space in the City Loop so more trains can travel across the city. It’s a key piece of infrastructure that supports future growth and planning for the municipality.

                    The City of Melbourne’s role

The City of Melbourne is working in partnership with Rail Projects Victoria (RPV) to support the successful planning and delivery of the project and will continue to do so until the Metro Tunnel is delivered to the community in 2025. Our role involves assessing the environmental impacts of the project, ensuring planning controls are in place to protect the rail infrastructure from future development, and working with RPV to ensure our community continues to thrive as the project progresses.

                    Sustainable transport

Our community is passionate about sustainable transport such as trains, trams, walking and cycling. The Metro Tunnel project will allow more people to access the city by train, helping to reduce the number of cars on the road and creating a less congested CBD. The City of Melbourne’s Draft Transport Strategy 2030 details our vision for a more enjoyable, safer and sustainable central city, which is easier to connect to and travel within, and better supports our local shops, eateries and businesses.

                    Planning for people

Whether you live, work or play in the City of Melbourne, you are one of the hundreds of thousands of people who visit the city each day. It can be an exciting, bustling place, which is why calm public spaces for respite and rest are integral to the city. Projects such as the Elizabeth Street Strategic Opportunities Plan will see essential gateways to the commercial centre become safer, greener and more people-friendly. These public realm improvements are happening now, alongside the Metro Tunnel project, to ensure our community has access to beautiful public spaces throughout the Metro Tunnel construction period and beyond.

                    Supporting local events and businesses

It’s the tiny laneway cafes, boutique businesses and quirky events that give Melbourne its unique soul. What’s On is your guide to the city and helps you support local businesses and events that may be impacted through the Metro Tunnel construction period. Shop local, meet the makers, and find out why ‘that’s so Melbourne’ is such a common refrain. Subscribe to What’s On to stay ahead of the curve.

                    Finding your way

Construction of new train stations and underground connections means there will be disruption around the city for the duration of the Metro Tunnel project. From single lane closures to full road closures, pedestrian crossing changes and bike lane modifications, it’s best to plan ahead to ensure a smooth journey.
