                    Parks and gardens are more important than ever to our community at this time.

                    In response to a large increase in visitor numbers we have created a list of frequently asked questions related to bringing marquees, gazebos, barbecues or other equipment to your gathering.

                    ​​In order to help us keep these areas looking great and being safe for everyone to enjoy, we ask that you follow the guidelines below when planning your picnics, exercise sessions or get-togethers this summer.

                    Frequently asked questions

                    Can I use a portable barbecue in the park?

                    ​Solid fuel barbecues are not permitted. Portable gas barbecues are permitted but must be raised off the turf and be fitted with a drip tray. Gas barbecues must be used in accordance with any restrictions that may apply during the fire danger period. Please check CFA - Total fire bans and ratings for current fire warnings .

                    Can I erect a marquee in the park?

                    Temporary marquees or gazebos, regardless of size, cannot be erected without prior consent. Marquees must adhere to strict safety guidelines and are only permitted via an event permit application process.

                    Can I attach a slackline, resistance bands or TRX suspension (total resistance exercise) equipment to trees in parks and gardens?

                    ​No. Attaching these types of items to trees can seriously damage them and can be dangerous for the operator and other park users. Tree and asset protection is enforced in accordance with the Activities Local Law 2019

                    We have recently installed slackline poles adjacent to the playground in JJ Holland Park in Kensington.

                    Can I bring a portable generator into the park?

                    ​No. An event permit is required to use a portable generator in City of Melbourne’s parks and gardens. 

                    Can I consume alcohol in Melbourne’s parks and gardens?

                    ​We are committed to community safety and promoting responsible drinking to ensure our city is safe and enjoyable for everyone. Read more on responsible consumption of alcohol

                    Can I bring furniture such as tables and chairs into the park?

                    ​Yes. Portable tables and chairs are allowed.

                    Can I scatter the ashes of my loved one in a park or garden?

                    ​We do not accept applications for the official scattering of ashes or planting of personal plants in our public parks and gardens, as it is not an activity consistent with the use and management of these spaces.
