The Green Our Rooftop project is a key action from the Green Our City Strategic Action Plan, which sets out the City of Melbourne’s vision for increasing green infrastructure.

Our city’s continued growth and densification, along with the impacts of climate change mean collaboration with the private sector is needed to ensure long-term liveability.

Green Our Rooftop is a joint initiative with the Victorian Government to:

  • Demonstrate how to successfully retrofit a building with a high quality green roof.
  • Educate the public about green roofs in an interactive way.
  • Demonstrate the benefits of green roofs through innovative research.
  • Provide environmental and social benefits including reducing stormwater discharge.

On Thursday 23 May 2019, Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change and Minister for Solar Homes Lily D’Ambrosio announced City of Melbourne and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action joint $2.5 million project to transform the Department of Treasury and Finance’s rooftop at 1 Treasury Place into a green rooftop by June 2020.

1 Treasury Place will be made available for research projects.

Green Our Rooftop research grants and postgraduate scholarships

As part of the Green Our Rooftop Demonstration Green Roof, the City of Melbourne, Victorian Government and Melbourne Water offered collaborative research grants and postgraduate scholarships worth $400,000.

Funding was available for high-quality research to support the future growth of green roofs in Melbourne.

Research focus:

  • water
  • urban heat island
  • biodiversity
  • health and wellbeing.

The research grants were designed to coincide with the construction and first few years of the green roof at 1 Treasury Place in Melbourne.

This research will be utilized to help develop local and State policy for the establishment and management of green roofs in Melbourne and south-eastern Australia.

Research will be made available through City of Melbourne’s Open Data Platform and potentially the Victorian Biodiversity AtlasOpens in new tab for other councils and governments, private industry, researchers and students and interested members of the public.
