Hero Apartment Green Wall

The Urban Forest Fund awarded $22,000 to the Hero Apartment Owners Corporation to create an eye-catching green wall in the heart of the city.

The Hero Apartment Green Wall will represent new greenery in an area devoid of canopy and green open space. As part of the proposed concept to be installed in 2023, a 45 metre long green wall will be installed along the prominent Little Collins Street façade of the Hero Apartment Building.

This project will showcase a small scale, but innovative demonstration of an inner city greening initiative where space is limited.

The Owners Corporation has partnered with specialist vertical garden company, Greenly Landscapes, to turn this concept into a reality.

As part of the project, green wall panels will be installed to create a stretch of vertical greenery, spanning 45 metres wide and half a metre in height.

The planting palette will integrate a mix of native and exotic shrubs, grasses and flowering species, adding colour to the existing heritage building.

Though located on private property at 118 Russell Street, once completed the project will be easily viewed at all times from the footpath on Little Collins Street and Russell Street, and from adjacent buildings.

Environment benefits

  • The green wall will create 22.5 square metres of new green cover, and this may extend as plants mature and cascade down the wall.
  • Integration of native flowering plants has potential to attract local pollinators.
  • The green wall panels themselves are constructed in Australia from 90%+ recycled materials and incorporate post-consumer waste materials in the growing media.

Community benefits

  • The green wall will improve amenity in Little Collins Street, adding character to the streetscape by creating a more visually engaging experience for visitors to the city and increasing overall pride of place for residents.
  • Installation of plants and growing media will contribute to noise reduction through absorption and diffusion of sound.
  • Because the green wall is located in a very windy part of the CBD, outcomes from this project will be useful for researchers and practitioners from urban greening disciplines with interest in plant performance and designing successful green spaces in windy conditions.
