Design awards

City of Melbourne recognises design excellence through giving awards and sponsoring industry awards programs. We’ve also won more than 200 state, national and international awards for our city-shaping projects.

Awards we’ve won

We’ve designed and partnered on some of Melbourne’s best-loved spaces, including Southbank Boulevard, Lincoln Square Playspace, Library at the Dock, Nature Play at Royal Park and Council House 2.

Recent wins

Transforming Southbank Boulevard won the 2024 Australian Urban Design Award for ‘Built projects – Local and Neighbourhood Scale’. We partnered with TCL and artist Mike Hewson to design and deliver this innovative project. It has received widespread acclaim and interest from leading design publications, including DezeenOpens in new tab, Landscape AustraliaOpens in new tab, BloombergOpens in new tab and The ConversationOpens in new tab.

The jury appreciated that this project seized an opportunity to prioritise space for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport. Designers working with multiple state authorities and more than 50 stakeholder institutions worked to imagine how 22,000 m² of space liberated from vehicles could offer more to its community.

According to the jury:

“As Australian cities are asked to accommodate increasing densities, the transformation of Southbank Boulevard demonstrates that streets become the setting for vibrant and sustainable community life when they are appropriately valued and well designed.”

2023 National Landscape Architecture Award for Excellence for Civic Landscape

Transforming Southbank Boulevard also won the

We also won at the 2023 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (Victorian Awards) for ‘Landscape Planning’ for Lincoln Square Playspace.

Home to the first public playground in Victoria from circa 1907, the playspace is designed for children of all ages. Built around the 150-year-old Moreton Bay Figs at the site, it features timber play structures using trees salvaged from the municipality.
