Keeping our city clean

We clean streets, public spaces and parks regularly, with those in the central city area cleaned every day and high usage areas cleaned many times a day.

We will remove or clean up:

  • litter and waste, including illegally dumped commercial and domestic waste
  • rubble, dirt and silt
  • oil or hazardous spills
  • dead animals, animal droppings and dog waste
  • weeds, leaves, small tree branches and pollen
  • bodily wastes including faeces, blood and vomit.

Maintenance of public spaces and facilities

We are also responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining various facilities and infrastructure in the city's streets, parks and other public spaces. This includes:

  • bollards, pedestrian fences and safety barriers
  • footpaths, bike paths and roads
  • lawns, nature strips and garden beds
  • public litter bins
  • parking infrastructure including meters, line markings, signage and bike parking hoops
  • playgrounds, sports grounds and skate parks
  • public toilets
  • signs and poles
  • stormwater drains, pipes and irrigation systems
  • street furniture such as park benches and drinking fountains
  • public artworks such as sculptures, statues and plaques
  • street lighting and light poles in certain areas.

Lock boxes in public spaces

It is illegal to attach lock boxes (key safes) to council infrastructure as they can impede access to services, cause damage to property or obstruct genuine use of the structure. This includes attaching lock boxes to disused bikes locked to infrastructure.

Removed lock boxes will be stored for two weeks, then they will be destroyed. Lock box owners can claim their property by contacting us and making an appointment. Proof of ownership will be required.

Emergencies in our parks

If you need to report an emergency in one of the following parks, look for the nearest emergency marker, call 000 and quote the reference code. There are emergency markers around:

  • Alexandra Gardens
  • Birrarung Marr
  • Fawkner Park
  • The Tan running track
  • Victoria Harbour
  • Waterfront City
  • Yarra’s Edge in Docklands.
