Recording Studio and Control Room

This small studio is designed to assist hirers in editing and recording audio.

Features of the room

​The space is ideal for recording and editing voiceovers for videos, audition tapes, podcasts and musical instruments. The hirer must attend an induction assessment before booking this space. 

Editing equipment

Equipment located in editing suite allows for recording 16 audio input channels with 4 headphone monitoring channels.

  • 2 x Genelec 8030 studio monitor speakers
  • 1 x Eight-channel SM Pro Audio PR8E microphone pre-amp (used for recording inside editing suite)
  • 1 x Fo​ur channel POWERPLAY PRO-XL HA4700 high-power headphones mixing and distribution​

All trams to Melbourne University (72, 67, 5, 6, 64, 3/3a, 16, 1 and 8), Stop 1.

Conditions of hire

Please note:

  • There is no permanent storage is available at this venue.
  • Toilets are located on both floor levels.
  • Access to the building is via a ramp and steps.

Before you book

If you wish to book to book the studio you will first need to complete an induction. Register your interest to attend by emailing LibraryAV@melbourne.vic.gov.au. This induction is a mandatory requirement prior to booking the recording studio.

The induction covers the fundamental operation of the recording studio at Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre. It will not cover recording and mixing techniques but s imply provides the basic knowledge to get started in the studio.

Once you've completed an induction session, you can book the recording studio.

Once we receive your booking request, we will provide you with a booking confirmation email with information on costs, inductions, building access (including after hours), security, cleaning and technical support. An invoice will follow separately. Payment can be made via the online payment portal, we only accept payment by debit/credit card.

If submitting a regular or recurring request, please be aware that bookings are limited to 15 hours per month, per hirer, and that certain spaces or times may not be suitable for recurring bookings.
