The Little Things that Run the City

The Little Things that Run the City - front cover
Urban ecology and biodiversity is a new area of work for the City of Melbourne. The Little Things that Run the City project began in late 2014, and in addition to several other projects, has contributed to understanding our existing biodiversity within Melbourne.

In collaboration with RMIT, the City of Melbourne has released a children’s book that focuses on 30 amazing insects in our city.

Did you know there are at least 15 species of dragonflies and damselflies in the city’s ponds and creeks? Or that beetles are the most common type of insect living in the City of Melbourne?

This book explores the diversity of insects we have within our city’s boundaries and examines what we can do to help them survive and thrive.

The Little Things that Run the City book is sold exclusively at the Melbourne Museum Shop and the Royal Botanic Gardens Shop for RRP $30.

Proceeds from the sale of this book go to our Urban Forest Fund to help accelerate more greening projects in the private realm in our city.
