Bus lanes

Bus lanes help to improve bus travel times and the reliability of bus services in the City of Melbourne. Find out how they work and see bus lane locations.

Improving performance

Bus lanes support the performance of the public transport network, which can encourage more people to use public transport. This may also alleviate congestion by reducing the overall number of vehicles using the city’s roads.

How bus lanes work

You can recognise a bus lane by the bus lane signs and markings on the road.

Bus lanes can operate 24 hours, every day or during morning or afternoon peak times only. During these operating hours, motorists may drive in a bus lane for up to 100 metres when entering or leaving the road.
