Melbourne Innovation Districts

We have partnered with the University of Melbourne and RMIT University to create Melbourne Innovation Districts (MID), a smart city initiative that is set to drive investment in the knowledge economy and help shape our city’s future.

This is just one of the ways we are continuing to lead the charge as a global smart city intelligently preparing for the changing needs our workforce, our community, the environment and the economy.

The collaboration is focussing initially on an urban innovation district in the university area north of the CBD (pictured in image gallery below).

The area is home to 21 per cent (60,260) of all knowledge sector jobs in Melbourne and features the central campuses of RMIT and the University of Melbourne, State Library Victoria, Queen Victoria Market, Royal Exhibition Building, Trades Hall and the Melbourne Museum.

We will be working with our partners to attract more small businesses, startups and social enterprises to the area. Through community events and improved public spaces, MID aims to provide more opportunities for Melbourne's knowledge workers, researchers, students, business and community organisations to connect and collaborate, creating innovative ideas essential for the city to continue to thrive and prosper.

We released the Melbourne Innovation Districts Urban Realm Action Plan for City North for community consultation in November 2018. Following analysis and research, the Melbourne Innovation Districts City North Opportunities Plan was developed and endorsed by the Future Melbourne Committee on 12 November 2019.
