Road management

Maintenance, renewal and discontinuance of road assets are a significant part of the City of Melbourne’s community responsibilities.

There are over 342 kilometres of roads within the municipality of Melbourne, and well-designed roads have been a feature of the city since the first surveyor's plan by Robert Hoddle in 1837. The majority of these roads, along with associated footpaths, kerb and channel, drainage, and bridges, are the responsibility of the City of Melbourne.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present.

We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.
