There are over 342 kilometres of roads within the municipality of Melbourne, and well-designed roads have been a feature of the city since the first surveyor's plan by Robert Hoddle in 1837. City of Melbourne manages many assets for the community, and one of the most significant of these – in terms of difficulty and expense of management – are road assets.
The majority of these roads, along with associated footpath, kerb and channel, drainage, and vehicular and pedestrian bridges, are the responsibility of the City of Melbourne. We also manage
road names and street numbering in the municipality.
The
Road Management Plan identifies the responsibilities, maintenance and inspection standards required to manage its civil liability and demonstrate its good management of road assets.
Melbourne has a mixture of public and private laneways and this has implications for management, maintenance and planning and development applications. City of Melbourne also has the authority to
discontinue (close) roads in the municipality and subsequently offer the land for sale.
