In 2006, 300,000 people worked in the municipality; by 2030 we expect this to grow to 550,000. Over a 10 year period our residential population has doubled to more than 120,000 as more people have made the city their home, and this is projected to grow to 210,000 by 2030. By then more than one million workers, students, residents and visitors will be in the city on a daily basis.
City of Melbourne's Municipal Planning Statement shows how this growth will be accommodated through the urban renewal of large sites and whole precincts in the municipality. These will incorporate the best transport, community services and urban infrastructure and build on Melbourne’s historic and cultural identity.
Urban renewal precincts
Melbourne’s growth presents exciting opportunities.
City of Melbourne and its partners are managing this growth with smart planning and high-quality urban design, by activating nearly 400 hectares of land across three urban renewal projects: Arden, Macaulay and Fishermans Bend.
Precinct | Suburbs covered |
---|---|
Macaulay | Kensington and North Melbourne |
Arden | North Melbourne |
Lorimer | Port Melbourne |
Fishermens Bend | Port Melbourne |
By revitalising these precincts with affordable housing, open green spaces and busy shopping precincts, inner-city areas are being transformed into places people want to live, work and invest.
We’ve received extensive community feedback. People want to live in thriving neighbourhoods with vibrant streets, quality community facilities, and well-designed buildings. Appropriate heritage protection, accessibility and climate-ready considerations are also priorities.

A fresh take on inner city living
These mixed-use neighbourhoods with distinct inner urban character have well-connected streets to encourage walking and cycling and easy access to public transport. Population forecasts show these combined neighbourhoods will be home to more than 100,000 residents by 2050.

A hub of opportunities
Acknowledging our industrial roots, we’re transforming these historical buildings into hubs for professional services, healthcare, education, technology and creative industries, creating endless employment opportunities.

A place to visit
Transport is the key to activation. The new Arden Station will be delivered by the Victorian Government as part of the Metro Tunnel Project. Fishermans Bend will be accessed by an expanded tram and rail network. Getting to and from these precincts will be much easier.
