Coworking spaces

Coworking spaces offer desk and office space solutions for a more mobile and flexible modern work life.

The popularity of coworking spaces in Melbourne continues to rise, with nearly half of all coworking spaces in Australia located here.

Coworking spaces encourage collaboration, innovation, mentoring and networking at a more affordable price than setting up your own office in the city.

Coworking spaces in Melbourne benefit from proximity to services and clients, and some spaces even offer facilities for meditation, podcasting, videography, gym workouts and libraries.

[Text on screen: What are co-working spaces? Shared, Flexible, Collaborative, Diverse.]

[Text on screen: Brad Kauskopf. The Hub.]

[Brad Kauskopf] The character of Melbourne has always been: it's a creative City it's a knowledge city. But what I love about co-working in Melbourne is that there are so many different choices for people. You can really choose the co-working community that suits you.

[Text on screen: Chris Mosely: The Cluster]

[Chris Mosely] They believe that 60% of the workforce is now going to be freelance or working for themselves or consulting outside of large corporations. But they still want that feel that community feel they still want to be part of something.

[Text on screen: Bettina Woodward. Space & Co.]

[Bettina Woodward] Co-working has really progressed quite rapidly in Australia. Now we've got spaces that really target different levels of business.

[Text on screen: Sean Qian. Collective Campus.]

[Sean Qian] Once we've identified education as a good place to be, we've decided to hone down and do more in that space.

[Text on screen: Armin Kroll. Open Hub.]

[Armin Kroll] It's about knowing other people and and just also the social interaction in the workplace.

[Text on screen: Martin Gleeson. Electron Workshop.]

[Martin Gleeson] We like businesses like us who've pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps and just wanted to get on with their work.

[Text on screen: Stuart B Richardson. York Butter Factory.]

[Stuart B Richardson] The founding team of generally two or three people who will actually join us to start with and then grow their team through probably a team size of between six to ten.

[Bettina Woodward] One of our members in particular has come in doing one type of work and then now owns three businesses as a result of working in here and having collaboration with other people within the space.

[Text on screen: The Cluster]

[The Cluster/uncredited woman] I operated a startup that's launching across multiple countries and multiple cities so it's super fun to be able to join with other people that are doing the same.

[Text on screen: Electron Workshop]

[Electron Workshop/uncredited man] There's a lot of community events that happen here. People building drones, hackathons, people learning how to code, pop-up cinemas.

[Sean Qian] We get around 500 peoples through the space of the week every week simply because of our workshops and classes.

[Armin Kroll] Podcasting equipment.

[Martin Gleeson] Cinema and presentation space

[Sean Qian] Fiber internet.

[Uncredited young man] Free pizza and beer.

[Uncredited businessman] To get people to meet you on the 10th floor and they come out and they go away. Here's a cafe.

[Uncredited man] Food machines are fantastic so that definitely keeps people on the straight and narrow.

[Armin Kroll] Great coffee machine.

[Martin Gleeson] And coffee.

[Uncredited woman] There's even a sleeping pod on level two if you want to come and have a nap.

[Text on screen: The Hub.]

[Uncredited man] When people do come to visit me here for a meeting they love the space. And you sort of see it in their eyes 'gee I wish I could work here' you know?

[Bettina Woodward] Offering a space that you want to bring someone into and they go 'this is awesome' that's what we really wanted to create.

[Text on screen: The Cluster]

[Uncredited woman] Not only again is it a wonderful vibe to just come into and have a chitchat about what happened on the weekend but also new people to meet all the time.
[Uncredited woman] Don't be afraid to share your ideas talk to whoever is next to you tell them what you're doing and you will never know what might come out of it.

[Brad Kauskopf] How can it actually inspire, excite, create those collisions, create different connections for people.

[Chris Moselly] Co-working is not just for your 20 year old ping pong playing thong-wearing entrepreneur. I think it's actually for everyone.

[Text on screen: The City of Melbourne supports a wide range of co-working spaces. For more information visit melbourne.vic.gov.au.]
