Waste and recycling in apartment buildings

More than 70 per cent of City of Melbourne residents live in high rise apartment buildings. Our high-rise recycling program reduces the amount of waste going to landfill and improves the quality and quantity of recycling.

Recycling and general waste

Depending on the size of your apartment building you may have chutes for general waste and recycling (leading to bins in the basement) or a designated bin room. Ask your building manager or owners corporation where your bins are located and to find out your bin collection day.

See Bins and collections for details of what can and can't go in the general waste and recycling bins.

Donation bins for clothing and shoes can be arranged, as well as e-waste recycle bins.

High-rise recycling and signs

Signage and stickers on bins and chute rooms help residents choose the right bin for their waste. These are available free of charge for building managers, owners corporation committees or other representative bodies.

Visit Waste signage for apartments to place an order for the latest available signs and materials. Copies of the signs and posters are also available to anyone to download and print.

Hard waste collections

Consider donating, selling or giving away items you no longer need such as whitegoods, old furniture and household items, if they are in good condition.

You can ask your building manager to book a hard waste collection for you. See Hard waste for details of what items we can and can't collect.

E-waste

Buildings with 20 apartments or more can organise a free e-waste collection bin to recycle household items with a plug, cord or battery. Bins are either 240 litre or 660 litre. Bins are to be kept undercover in a secure location and require monitoring for fullness by an onsite Building Manager or caretaker.

E-waste bins are not picked up on a regular schedule and require a booking request for collection. Follow the My waste collection; Address; Building manager flow to book a collection. Or call City of Melbourne on 03 9658 9658.
