Waste and recycling in apartment buildings

                    High-rise buildings
More than 70 per cent of City of Melbourne residents live in high rise apartment buildings.

Our high rise recycling program reduces the amount of waste going to landfill and improves the quality and quantity of recycling collected from residential apartment buildings.

                    Recycling and general waste

Depending on the size of your apartment building you may have chutes for general waste and recycling (leading to bins in the basement) or a designated bin room. Ask your building manager or owners corporation where your bins are located and to find out your bin collection day.

See Bins and collections for details of what can and can't go in the general waste and recycling bins.

                    High-rise recycling and signs

The high rise recycling program reduces the amount of waste going to landfill and improves the quality and quantity of recycling collected from residential apartment buildings.

Signage and stickers for bins and chute rooms are available free of charge to building managers, owners' corporation committees or other representative bodies and assist residents in choosing the right bin or chute.

Donation bins for clothing and shoes can also be arranged, as well as additional cardboard and recycling bins.

Visit Waste signage for apartments to place an order for the latest available signs and materials. Copies of the signs and posters are also available to anyone to download and print.

                    Hard waste collections

Consider donating, selling or giving away items you no longer need such as whitegoods, old furniture and household items, if they are in good condition.

You can ask your building manger to book a hard waste collection for you. See Hard waste for details of what items we can and can't collect.

                    E-waste

Buildings with 20 apartments or more can organise to have a free e-waste collection bin, to recycle all household items with a plug, cord or battery. Bins are either 240 litre or a 660 litre. This service needs to be booked by either a building manager or owners corporation. Bins are to be kept undercover in a secure location.

To book an e-waste bin for your building, please call City of Melbourne on 03 9658 9658.
