Venue hire at Signal

Signal is a youth arts facility located in the heart of the city beside the Yarra River. This heritage building has two spaces for hire and can fit up to 70 people.

​​​​This historical building, formerly the Flinders Street 'A' Signal Box, has two spaces for hire, suitable for small-scale gatherings such as meetings, creative workshops, rehearsals and team building exercises.

  • Signal Space - the Signal Space is 59 square metres and has a capacity to host 30 seats in a theatre style setting and standing room for 50.
  • Signal Studio - the Signal Studio is 45 square metres and has a capacity of 15 seats for a meeting and standing room for 20 people.

The Signal Space and Signal Studio can be hired simultaneously for larger events - please indicate this in the booking application form.

Effective 1 July 2023 until 30 June 2024.

Venue hire rates – corporate:

  • Half day (four hours): $498
  • Full day (eight hours): $968

Venue hire rates – non-funded / funded / not-for-profit organisations:

  • Half day (four hours): $369
  • Full day (eight hours): $718

Staff:

  • $61 per person, per hour (Mondays to Saturdays)
  • Penalty rates for staff apply on Sundays and public holidays

Note:  

  • Venue hire rates include one staff 
  • Additional staff may be required and is dependent on the size and/or nature of the event.

Equipment: 

  • Standard PA system per event: $160 per event.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. It is a requirement for venue staff to be present as safety officers. The number of venue staff will be dependent on the nature and the size of the event.

The hirer is responsible for providing the additional staff that their event may require. Signal will request evidence of certification, where relevant, of the hired staff. 

Tables (1000mm x 1000mm), folding chairs and a data projector are included in the hire. The sound system is available for hire at an additional cost. Please refer to the online application form. 

No​. It is the responsibility of the hirer to organise catering and provide evidence of the relevant certification when requested.  

Signal does not have a kitchen for self-catering. No barbecuing is permitted at or around the venue.

No. The external area is not included in the venue hire. 

Yes. However, the venue must be reinstated to the condition at the commencement of hire.

If the hirer fails to meet the requirements of the venue, the hirer will be charged with additional fees to have the venue reinstated. 

All city venues are smoke-free zones. Smoking is strictly prohibited in the venue and surrounding areas at all times.  

Naked flames including candles, smoke machines, special balloon effects and pyrotechnics are prohibited at or around the venue.

The venue is alcohol free, therefore serving and selling of alcohol is prohibited.

 

You may be required to provide security depending on the nature of your event. This is at the discretion of the venue manager. 

You must hold a current public liability insurance policy of at least $20 million. A certificate of currency must be provided before the commencement of hire.

No. There are public car parks located on Flinders Street and in the Southbank precinct.

A written notification must be provided to the venue manager immediately.  Penalty rates will apply for any cancellation less than 4 weeks from the date of the hire.
