                    Southbank projects

Southbank is our vibrant cultural and Arts Precinct, home to NGV International, the Arts Centre, ABC and many more cultural institutions. It’s Melbourne’s fastest growing suburb and our most densely populated, and sees more than 18,000 residents, 45,000 workers and 80,000 visitors every day.

City of Melbourne has invested $42 million to transform Southbank and secure its reputation as our premier arts and cultural destination.

We will transform Southbank from grey to green with 2.5 hectares of new open space, and make necessary improvements to access and activation to ensure it remains a city for all people.

A full audit of the City of Melbourne’s capital works program for the Southbank Precinct can be found in the Southbank Projects and Priorities Report: 2010–2021.

Below you can find information on a range of major projects currently taking place in the Southbank precinct.

                    • Boyd Village development (132 Kavanagh Street)

A new vibrant community village is being created in Southbank featuring affordable housing and community facilities, following an agreement between City of Melbourne and PDG Corporation.
                    • City Road Master Plan

The City Road Master Plan was endorsed by the Future Melbourne Committee in June 2016. The master plan will transform City Road into a safe and welcoming place for everyone through a series of capital works projects.
                    • Dodds Street Linear Park

New green space is on the way for Southbank as we convert roadway into public open space in the heart of Melbourne’s arts precinct.
                    • Southbank Promenade upgrade

City of Melbourne’s works to create a wider, safer and more accessible Southbank Promenade between Princes Bridge and Evan Walker Bridge are now complete.
                    • Southbank's urban forest

A healthy urban forest plays a critical role in maintaining the health and liveability of Melbourne, by cooling the city, supporting the health and wellbeing of urban dwellers, and providing habitat for native birds and pollinators.
                    • Transforming Southbank Boulevard

We've delivered an ambitious project to create five new public spaces and neighbourhood parks along Southbank Boulevard for the people of Southbank, Melbourne's most densely populated suburb. The project also includes new trees and 1.1 km of new bike lanes.
