                    City projects

                    City of Melbourne has oversight of many of the major infrastructure projects transforming the city such as Metro Tunnel and the Queen Victoria Market Precinct Renewal Program.

                    We also have direct responsibility for the design and delivery of an annual capital works portfolio with a total value of approximately $85.6 million per annum.

                    Below you can find information on a range of projects currently taking place in the city.

                    Current projects

                    • Amendment C323: Melbourne Arts Precinct

                      Amendment C323 seeks to introduce planning controls to encourage the provision of arts and creative industry along Sturt Street, Southbank in order to support the Melbourne Arts Precinct. The amendment was adopted by Council on 26 May 2020. A determination from the Minister for Planning is pending.
                    • Bourke Street Precinct Redevelopment

                      Plans are underway to revitalise the civic heart of the city to create new spaces where people can meet, connect and engage with the city.
                    • Boyd development (132 Kavanagh Street)

                      A new vibrant community village will be created in Southbank featuring affordable housing and community facilities, following an agreement between the City of Melbourne and PDG Corporation.
                    • Boyd Park

                      The new neighbourhood park for Southbank Boulevard adjacent to the Boyd Community Hub was completed at the end of 2019.
                    • City Road Master Plan

                      The City Road Master Plan was endorsed by the Future Melbourne Committee in June 2016. The master plan will transform City Road into a safe and welcoming place for everyone through a series of capital works projects.
                    • Elizabeth Street south streetscape improvements

                      The City of Melbourne is commencing streetscape improvement works on the southern end of Elizabeth Street between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane in February 2021. The project is expected to be completed by May 2021, weather permitting.
                    • Enterprize Park Landscape Upgrade

                      Works to upgrade the landscape at Enterprize Park, located on the north side of the Yarra River between Melbourne Aquarium and Queens Bridge Street are underway.
                    • JJ Holland Park

                      JJ Holland Park on Kensington Road covers more than 10 hectares and is home to a number of facilities, ovals and other spaces.
                    • Lady Huntingfield Early Learning and Family Services Centre works

                      Lady Huntingfield Early Learning and Family Services Centre was built 77 years ago and has had major structural and recurrent maintenance issues over many years.
                    • Lincoln Square Concept Plan

                      Lincoln Square is a significant local open space in Carlton, in the heart of Melbourne’s Innovation District, valued by residents, local workers, students and visitors for its mature trees, sunny lawns and gathering spaces.
                    • Little Streets

                      At the City of Melbourne, pedestrian safety is one of our top priorities. That’s why people walking on Flinders Lane, Little Collins, Little Bourke and Little Lonsdale streets now have right of way over vehicles and bikes. We’ve also reduced the speed limit.
                    • Melbourne security upgrades

                      The Victorian Government, City of Melbourne and Victoria Police are working in partnership to strengthen security across Melbourne’s central city.
                    • New bike lanes

                      The City of Melbourne is fast-tracking the delivery of 40 kilometres of kerbside protected bike lanes and pedestrian improvements across the city.
                    • New park in Market Street

                      We are embarking on the creation of the first urban park in the city centre since City Square was developed in the 1980s. The new park, located off Market Street, will create 1900 square metres of new public open space in the central city.
                    • Public art in Southbank

                      We are embarking on an ambitious project to create 2.5 hectares of public space and neighbourhood parkland for the people of Southbank, Melbourne's most densely populated suburb.
                    • Queen Victoria Market Precinct Renewal

                      Through renewal we want to retain and restore the Queen Victoria Market’s heritage while improving facilities for traders, customers and visitors. Everything we do is about ensuring the market is viable for future generations of small business.
                    • Seafarers Rest Park

                      City of Melbourne is working in partnership with the Victorian Government and private property developer Riverlee, to create a new public park at Seafarers Rest in Docklands.
                    • Southbank Promenade

                      Southbank Promenade is one of the city’s busiest public spaces. City of Melbourne is planning to revitalise a 300 metre section of the promenade in 2021 from Princes Bridge to Evan Walker Bridge to provide greater safety and improved amenity for all users of the space.
                    • Southbank's urban forest

                      A healthy urban forest plays a critical role in maintaining the health and liveability of Melbourne, by cooling the city, supporting the health and wellbeing of urban dwellers, and providing habitat for native birds and pollinators.
                    • Transforming Southbank Boulevard

                      We are embarking on an ambitious project to create 2.5 hectares of public space and neighbourhood parkland for the people of Southbank, Melbourne's most densely populated suburb.
                    • University Square – creating a 21st century park

                      City of Melbourne has worked with the University of Melbourne and the Victorian Government to transform University Square, one of Carlton's oldest and most loved public squares.
