The City of Melbourne is responsible for the registration of domestic animal businesses, and ensuring they comply with legal requirements set out in the Domestic Animals Act 1994Opens in new tab. Each business type has a Code of Practice that sets out the minimum standard for operation. This includes requirements for the welfare of animals and issues such as:

  • ventilation
  • waste management
  • hygiene
  • staff care and responsibilities.

Businesses are also required to comply with all relevant City of Melbourne requirements including Planning, Building and Development, Health and Local Laws. Domestic animal businesses must apply to register with us and must renew their registration each year prior to 10 April.

Pet registration

Owning a pet comes with many benefits, but also some legal responsibilities. Registering your pet with your local Council is one of them.

We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.
