                    Syringe disposal

                    City of Melbourne provides a range of free services to ensure that needles and syringes are disposed of safely.

                    ​​​​​​Our services include:

                    • approximately 470 syringe disposal bins, located across the municipality and in all public toilets that are serviced regularly
                    • daily weekday clean-up of syringes in public spaces
                    • fast, on-call collection of inappropriately discarded syringes.
                    Note: Syringe container exchange service

                    Due to Melbourne Town Hall renovations, customers currently cannot exchange syringe containers at the Town Hall.

                    If you need to exchange a syringe container, please call our Customer Relations Team on 9658 9658.

                    You can use our online form to request the following services: 

                    • pick up discarded syringes 
                    • empty or repair a fixed syringe bin.

                    If you have a needle-stick injury

                    Don’t panic. Your risk of contracting a blood-borne virus is extremely low.

                    • Rinse the wound with flowing water then wash with soap and water.
                    • Cover the wound and seek medical attention to assess your risks of bacterial and blood-borne virus infection.
                    • Where possible, retrieve the syringe for testing or disposal, or isolate the area to prevent others from injuring themselves.
