Interlibrary loans

If you can’t find an item in our City of Melbourne libraries, you can request an interlibrary loan from other libraries.

You can request books, talking books, magazines and journal articles. You cannot request DVDs, CDs or games.

Interlibrary loans are for either three or six weeks, depending on the supplying library. Renewals are not available.

You can have up to two interlibrary loans in process at any one time.

There is no charge for interlibrary loans obtained from public libraries in Victoria.

However, there is a charge of $32 for items from academic libraries and some interstate public libraries.

How to request an interlibrary loan

1. Log into LibraryLink online portal.

  • User ID is your City of Melbourne Libraries barcode number.
  • Password is the one you set up with us.

Log into LibraryLinkOpens in new tab

2. Choose City of Melbourne Libraries from the drop down menu.

3. Search for the item you want and select 'Get it' in the top right.

To request a journal article, you need to search for the title of the journal, and then fill in the request form with the title of the article, the page numbers, the year it was published, the number and volume.

4. Enter $32 into the 'amount willing to pay' field to include items from charging libraries.

Otherwise, leave it blank to only consider items from non-charging libraries.

5. Select your desired pick-up location from the drop down menu and click on 'Request' button.

Borrowing and book straps

Interlibrary loans must be borrowed at the counter. You cannot use the self-checkout machine.

All interlibrary loan items are accompanied with a book strap. These straps allow you to borrow the item from City of Melbourne Libraries. If you misplace the strap please alert library staff.

Interlibrary Loan Policy

Interlibrary loans have special requirements. To be provided with an interlibrary loan you must agree to the policy.
