Arrange the right waste service for your business
Most businesses need to organise both a waste and recycling collection service through a private waste collection company.
We have strict waste laws governing the storage and collection of waste. Many businesses have their bins collected from their premises.
For those businesses where onsite collection is not possible, waste bins must be stored on your property and only brought out for collection. Businesses in the central city must have a permit for each bin collected from public space.
Storing bins in the public space is permitted only under special circumstances. These circumstances are determined by a council Officer. Special permits with strict conditions apply.
The amount and type of waste produced by your business will determine the size and number of bins you need, and how often they should be collected. See the list of permitted private waste and recycling collectors who can assist with your businesses waste serving needs.
As an alternative to private waste bins, City of Melbourne operates waste and recycling hubs throughout the central city.

Waste bin permits
Permit holders are responsible for ensuring bins are:
- identified with a valid adhesive bin permit affixed to the bin at all times, with all information clearly displayed
- stored in the approved location
- regularly cleaned and in a presentable state and any damage or faults are repaired within 48 hours.
- remain locked with the lid closed when not being filled or emptied

Supporting documents
A permit is required for each bin coming into the public space. When submitting your permit application you will need to:
- Upload a photo showing the area where you are looking to store the bin/s
- Provide information on the planned bin size, waste stream, collection day/s and collection company
Fees
No fees currently apply to waste bin permits.
Most permits are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.
