United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The overarching framework for global sustainable development, Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, sets out 17 Sustainable Development Goals for all countries to achieve economic progress, social inclusion and environmental sustainability by the year 2030.

The Goals are a call-to-action for countries to promote prosperity while protecting our planet, now and into the future – with a central promise to leave no one behind.

Designed with national governments in mind, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development requires action from a broad range of stakeholders and partnerships. As a major capital city, we have a key role to play in localising and addressing the issues articulated in the goals.

The Goals are a guiding framework to ensure our initiatives achieve holistic sustainable development. We must play a role, and partner with others to address the challenges we all face, to ensure no one is left behind.

City of Melbourne has taken the lead and conducted a Voluntary Local Review (VLR) on the city's progress towards the Goals.

In an Australian-first, we have localised the Goals to assess its tackling global challenges with local action – to end poverty, protect the planet and support peace and prosperity by 2030.

The VLR provides an important benchmark for Council and its community to

  • celebrate strong progress against some goals
  • to identify whether we're on track to achieve our targets and areas which require further investigation and improvement.
