City Gallery

Located at Melbourne Town Hall, City Gallery presents a program of regular, free exhibitions on city life, past and present.

People walking past a building facade with a gallery

Specialist guest curators, often working in collaboration with artists and other creatives, offer intriguing perspectives on Melbourne life. These exhibitions often feature newly commissioned work and always showcase the City of Melbourne Art and Heritage Collection, which offers an eclectic range of 13,000 artworks and artefacts. Indeed, the gallery and the collection have a symbiotic relationship.

The City Gallery is set in the Swanston Street facade of Melbourne Town Hall, where it shares an entrance with City of Melbourne Customer Service. Two large windows form the gallery’s face to the street, with window signage displaying the current show to passers-by.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present.

We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.

We accept the invitation in the Uluru Statement from the Heart and are committed to walking together to build a better future.
