Heritage buildings

Restoring the market’s iconic heritage buildings.

Close up of a building with letters that reads "Queen Victoria Market."

The works to the much-loved Meat and Fish Hall, Dairy Produce Hall and Elizabeth Street terraces will make it easier for traders to operate and enhance the experience for customers.

The buildings bounded by Elizabeth Street, Victoria, Queen and Therry streets are the oldest part of the market and like all heritage buildings of this age, deterioration has occurred over time with the fabric weakening and services not functioning as effectively.

Through the Precinct Renewal program, we’re preserving and celebrating the market’s long history and cultural heritage significance, and retaining the physical fabric is a key component.

The project will seek to not only enhance the appearance and amenity of the Melbourne landmarks, but ensure the buildings ongoing conservation, viability, security and sustainability.
