The City of Melbourne's Transport Strategy 2030 supports a transition to electric vehicles as they help reduce emissions. To complement the strategy, we are currently developing a plan to encourage more low-emissions vehicles.
Electric vehicle charging stations
The City of Melbourne has the densest network of electric vehicle charging stations in Victoria, including 12 chargers at the new Queen Victoria Market underground car parkOpens in new tab.
Chargers are in locations such as shopping centres, supermarkets, hotels, off-street car parks and petrol stations. People without access to private off-street parking such as apartment dwellers will need to use public charging points.

We are working with the Victorian Government to amend planning scheme controls to require new off-street parking spaces to be electric vehicle ready.

On-street charging
On-street charging is currently not supported in the central city, where the demand for space is very high. We are looking for appropriate locations to install public on-street charging in the future.
