E-waste and chemicals

Electronic waste and chemicals must not be put in general waste or recycling bins. Find options for recycling and disposing of e-waste and unwanted chemicals.

E-waste drop-off

E-waste (electronic waste) is anything with a plug, cord or battery.

The Victorian Government has banned all e-waste from landfill. Please drop off your e-waste for recycling. E-waste will be taken apart, shredded, sorted and then recycled into new items.

Drop-off locations

Small e-waste

Examples include mobile phones, cameras, laptops, electronic charging cables, powerbanks, household batteries.

Medium e-waste

Items that can fit into a 240 litre bin (household wheelie bin). Examples include computer monitors, small TVs, vacuum cleaners, microwaves, kettles, toasters​.

Larger e-was​​te

Residents are entitled to one free hard waste collection of one cubic metre per year. Find out more about our hard waste collection service or book your free collectionOpens in new tab.

If you live in a high-rise building, please contact your building manager and they will organise a collection on your behalf.

Other drop-off locations

Drop off e-waste at the Dynon Road Waste and Recycling Centre (charges may apply).

Mobile phones, computer accessories and batteries can be recycled at some Officeworks stores. Check with individual stores for what items they accept:

  • 461 Bourke Street, Melbourne
  • 107 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne
  • QV Centre. Russell Street, Melbourne

Batteries can be dropped off at Aldi stores:

  • 501 Swanston Street, Melbourne
  • 100 Market Street, South Melbourne

  • televisions
  • desktop computers and laptop computers
  • computer equipment  and accessories
  • printers and photocopiers
  • internet/network equipment such as servers
  • printers, photocopiers and scanners
  • household batteries
  • landline phones and mobile phones
  • electronic games and accessories
  • cameras (all types)
  • DVD and video players
  • sound equipment such as speakers
  • household electrical appliances such as vacuum cleaners, hairdryers, toasters, kettles and microwaves
  • tools
  • battery packs and rechargers
  • powerbanks
  • hard drives and USB storage devices (once wiped of sensitive content and material)​.

Not accepted

  • air conditioners
  • halogen lights
  • x-ray equipment
  • chemicals
  • hazardous material and medical equipment
  • car, truck and eBike batteries
  • white goods
  • compact fluorescent tubes

E-waste bin collection for apartment buildings

E-waste bins at apartment buildings and high rises require monitoring by an onsite building manager or caretaker.

As e-waste bins are not picked up on a regular schedule, they require a booking request for collection.

Chemical waste

Do not put chemicals into your landfill or recycling bin.

Drop off unwanted chemicals for free at your closest Detox Your HomeOpens in new tab collection point. The chemicals will either be recycled or disposed of safely.

Please note: the maximum acceptable weight or size of any single container is 20 kg or 20 litre. Decanting isn't permitted, so bring chemicals in disposable containers. Some chemicals may not be accepted.

The Detox Your Home collection service is run by Sustainability Victoria in partnership with local councils.
