If you are having difficulty paying outstanding rates, you may be able to apply for rate relief through our Rates Financial Hardship Policy.

The policy assists ratepayers in the City of Melbourne municipality who meet the following criteria:

                    • For waiver of rates – a ratepayer of a residential property who is also the owner-occupier
                    • For deferment of rates – both residential and commercial ratepayers
                    • For suspension, reduction or waiving of interest charges – both residential and commercial ratepayers.

If you are experiencing financial hardship and need help paying your rates, please follow the steps to apply for rate relief.

                    Rate deferral or payment plan

Rate deferral: To assist ratepayers that may be facing current financial hardship, we are providing the option to defer the payment of council rates to a period negotiated upon application.

Payment plan: If you are having difficulties in making payments, prior to the due dates, you may apply to Council for a payment plan.

To apply for either a rate deferral or payment plan, please forward your request or proposed payment plan to rates@melbourne.vic.gov.au to be assessed.

                    Rate waiver or reduction

An owner experiencing financial hardship may only apply for a waiver of rates in respect of a rateable property which is used exclusively for residential purposes by the owner and is the owner’s sole or principal place of residence.

If you are an owner occupier of residential property, applications can be made below.
                    For owner-occupied residential property only.
