                    Public art in University Square

                    City of Melbourne has commissioned two temporary public artworks as part of the Stage One Masterplan for the redevelopment of University Square, Carlton.

                    ​The first of these temporary commissions, Apparition by Melbourne based artist Mikala Dwyer, was installed at University Square in April 2021, and remained on site until May 2022.​​

                    Distant Things Appear Suddenly Near, by Irish artist Sean Lynch, was installed at the north plaza of University Square in December 2021 and will remain in place until mid 2024. 

                    Both artworks were developed through a long-term engagement with th​e site, beginning with a two-week intensive that focused on the contested public realm.
