We’re transforming the north bank of the Yarra River – Birrarung into an unmissable, bucket-list destination for locals and visitors.

The Greenline Project will deliver a 4 km seamless, connected journey with improved public spaces for events, public art and recreation along the way. The project will be split into five inter-connected precincts – Birrarung Marr, The Falls, River Park, Maritime and Saltwater Wharf, all highlighting the area’s rich indigenous history.

You can find out more about the full scale of the project by visiting the Greenline Project Participate Melbourne page.

                    Birrarung Marr Precinct Site 1

To kick-start the delivery of the Greenline Project, works will begin in Birrarung Marr where the river’s edge will be transformed with 450 m of new boardwalks, promenades and a variety of native habitats.

The concept plan for Site 1 was endorsed by the Future Melbourne Committee on 6 December 2022 following feedback and input from the community. The design will be inclusive and accessible, allowing people of all abilities to experience Birrarung Marr in new ways.

Construction on this transformative project will start in late April 2024, and expected to be complete by the end of 2024. Timber hoarding will be installed around the worksite, with access to move through Birrarung Marr being restricted in some areas. Please take care while moving around the worksite and follow the alternative routes outlined in the traffic management plan. We thank the community for their patience and understanding as we get on this landmark project.

In line with our Urban Forest Strategy, which aims to create a resilient, healthy and diverse urban forest, 60 new trees will be planted in the area – with 21 trees being removed. You can find out more in the project’s Tree Removal Plan.

                    Greenline Implementation Plan

In December 2021, the Future Melbourne Committee endorsed the Greenline Implementation Plan – outlining the vision for the city-shaping project.

                    Greenline Project Business Case

On 6 September 2022, the Future Melbourne Committee endorsed the business case for the Greenline Project - which estimates the project will deliver more than $740 million in net benefits to Melbourne.

                    Floating wetlands trial

In December 2022, the City of Melbourne launched a series of floating wetlands to support a healthy ecosystem on the Yarra River as part of a trial project funded by the Victorian Government.

The floating wetlands are in place at:

                    • Victoria Harbour Promenade, Docklands (in front of Library at the Dock)

                    • Yarra's Edge near Webb Bridge

                    • Turning Basin (next to Enterprize Park and SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium).

                    Master Plan

The final Greenline Project Master Plan was approved by the Future Melbourne Committee on 5 December 2023.

The master plan will provide a framework for the Greenline Project, one of the biggest city-shaping projects in Melbourne's history.

Development of the Greenline Project Draft Master Plan commenced in late 2022, after the contract for this work was awarded to a group of design consultants led by Aspect Studios and TCL

Two rounds of community consultation were completed in 2023 to firstly inform the Master Plan, and then to provide feedback on the draft document. You can find out more about these consultations by visiting Participate Melbourne

                    Early investigative works

From late January to late March 2023, survey work was conducted along the entire length of the north bank to capture a 3D digital model of the Greenline Project area. The model will:

                    • Provide the basis to develop a digital twin of the Greenline Project.

                    • Allow for detailed engineering design for elements at all levels – including pipes and pits, to above ground utilities.

                    • Support the delivery of detailed design for each site of the Greenline Project.
