New Year’s Eve to light up magnetic Melbourne

Media release, Monday 24 October 2022
Melburnians will be celebrating the end of 2022 in spectacular style, with the biggest ever New Year’s Eve celebrations in the city.

Fireworks are just the beginning of what will be an unmissable New Year’s Eve celebration in Melbourne, with an estimated half a million people expected at entertainment sites across the city.

The City of Melbourne will ring in 2023 with the largest midnight moment it's ever delivered, with fireworks and laser displays from 30 CBD rooftops – eight more than previous years.

The enhanced midnight fireworks display will be set to an eight-minute soundtrack, curated by Melbourne producer and DJ Mike Katz, and will dazzle from anywhere the city skyline can be viewed.

Melbourne will be buzzing with options galore for New Year’s Eve revelers. Superstars Marina Prior and John Foreman will host the Aussie Pops Orchestra’s New Year’s Eve Gala extravaganza at Arts Centre Melbourne, while Falls Festival will bring some of the world’s best live acts to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

Hospitality venues such as Atet, Arbory, Taxi Kitchen and dozens more will have special offers in place for those wanting to welcome 2023 with a spectacular food and drink feast.

Celebration Zones at Docklands, Flagstaff Gardens, Treasury Gardens and Kings Domain will offer family-friendly options at different corners of the city – with DJs, live music, dance workshops, light installations and food trucks, as well as a 9.30pm localised fireworks display.

Those ringing in the New Year at home can tune in to the official New Year’s Eve live broadcast with Channel 9 showcasing all the highlights of the evening from 11pm.

Safety remains the City of Melbourne’s number one priority and a detailed safety plan will be in place to ensure the wellbeing of everyone celebrating in the city, in partnership with Victoria Police and other emergency services.

New Year’s Eve revelers are encouraged to plan early, book into one of the city’s world-class hospitality venues and act responsibly.

The City of Melbourne is also gearing up to kick off its much-loved Christmas Festival, which will feature an exciting line-up of attractions over a joyful six-week period to wrap up 2022.

New Year’s Eve celebrations in the city and the Christmas Festival are supported by the $200 million Melbourne City Revitalisation Fund – a partnership between the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government.

“There is no place like Melbourne at New Year’s and we’re putting our best foot forward to bring in 2023 with a not-to-be-missed spectacular of fireworks, laser beams and music.”

“If you can see the city skyline, you’ll be able to see the fireworks, with activation zones across the city.”

“Melbourne is a special place every day, but at New Year’s Eve, the best of our city is on display.”

“We know Melburnians have missed the chance to celebrate together and that’s why we will deliver the biggest fireworks display ever – welcoming in the New Year like never before.”

“We are investing in the biggest ever New Year’s Eve celebrations because we know drawing visitors to magnetic Melbourne is one of the most important things we can do as a council.”

Quote attributable to the Minister for Industry Support and Recovery Ben Carroll

“New Year’s Eve celebrations in Melbourne are iconic not just here but around the world and we’re backing them to be bigger than ever this year, boosting the economy and creating a spectacle for thousands of Victorians to enjoy.”
