                    Melbourne Youth Services

People lie down and smile at a phone.
City of Melbourne funds the delivery of a range of crisis, social support, recreation and education programs for young people in the municipality.

Youth services are open to any young person who is aged 12 to 25 years and lives or studies in the City of Melbourne.

We work to make sure all of our programs and services are inclusive and welcoming. Our programs are tailored to meet the specific needs and interests of young people, with particular focus on:

                    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people
                    • Culturally and Linguistically Diverse young people

Youth Services as of 1 July 2018

Last year we spoke to more than 100 young people, youth service providers, key stakeholders, and the community. We asked these groups what they thought was important for how City of Melbourne delivers youth services. We heard that there is a need for greater access to programs and services, as well as more opportunities for young people to contribute to the planning and delivery of these programs.

As a result of this consultation we have:

                    • changed the scope of delivery. As a result we recently tendered for one provider to deliver youth services across the whole municipality, including North Melbourne, Kensington, Carlton and CBD.
                    • separated out the contract for funding of services which solely focus on youth homelessness response. Find out more about this service.

We are very pleased to announce that as of 1 July 2018, drummond street services will be responsible for delivering youth programs across the municipality (with the exception of the youth homelessness response program).

drummond street services have provided City of Melbourne youth services in Carlton/Parkville for a number of years, and will now increase their services to deliver across the municipality. They have an innovative and inclusive approach to youth services. This is demonstrated through their commitment to work with young people to design their programs, as well as their youth employment and peer leader model and we are very excited to be working with them.

These changes will benefit young people by allowing greater reach and consistency of programs and services, as well as filling important service gaps across the municipality.

When does the new contract begin?

The new contract begins on 1 July 2018.

What does the change in contract mean?

Between 1 July and 30 September 2018, drummond street services will with work with young people right across the community to co-design their youth programs for 2018-19. Established programs in North Melbourne and Kensington will continue and young people will be invited to provide feedback about how these might be strengthened and improved. To deliver the new contract drummond street services will expand their team of youth practitioners and peer leaders, meaning there will be some new faces leading the delivery of youth programs in North Melbourne, Kensington, Carlton and Parkville.

We will all be working together to ensure a smooth transition and that youth services will continue to be delivered consistently across the municipality.

We would like to acknowledge the outstanding work and close community connections developed by Cohealth with the North Melbourne and Kensington communities during the last 15 years.

Is City of Melbourne still delivering youth homelessness services?

Yes, City of Melbourne will continue to fund Frontyard Youth Services to deliver specialist youth homelessness services. As of 1 July this will be done via a separate youth homelessness contract. Find out more about this service.
