                    Domestic animal businesses

                    The City of Melbourne is responsible for the registration of domestic animal businesses. ​Currently we have six registered domestic animal business’ including two animal shelters, two pet shops and two overnight boarding establishments.

                    Animal shelters

                    • Lost Dogs Home
                    • Lort Smith Adoption Centre.

                    Pet shops

                    • Upmarket pets
                    • Victoria Market pet shop.

                    Overnight boarding

                    • The Pets Hotel
                    • Cat Camp

                    Each business type has a code of practice that sets out the minimum standard for operation. This includes requirements for the welfare of animals and issues such as:

                    • ventilation
                    • waste management
                    • hygiene
                    • staff care and responsibilities.

                    Businesses are also required to comply with all relevant City of Melbourne requirements including Building and Development, Health and Local Laws. Domestic animal businesses must apply to register with us and must renew their registration each year prior to 10 April.
