Reducing the amount of waste we produce, recycling and resource recovery are important aspects of a sustainable city.

City of Melbourne has adopted a new Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030 that sets targets and identifies actions the city will take to reduce waste, increase resource recovery and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from  waste.

We are constantly looking for ways to support waste reduction. We provide a free e-waste recycling service for apartment buildings, funding support for businesses to produce less waste as a priority, and help for home composters with discounts on worm farms and compost bins.

Despite current disruptions to the recycling industry, we can confirm that recycling collection services remain unchanged. Residents are encouraged to continue separating waste between the comingled recycling and landfill bins. Our waste and recycling centre at 437 Dynon Road in West Melbourne is also accepting drop off recycling. You can take kerbside recycling items like plastics, cardboard and separated glass to the centre.

What can you do to reduce waste?

There are many ways to reduce our waste impacts by avoiding waste and reusing what we can. You can:

                    • take your recycling to the Dynon Road recycling centre
                    • say no to single-use plastics and packaging
                    • compost your food scraps and organic waste
                    • keep recycling, avoiding or minimising waste
                    • recycle your e-waste
                    • support sustainable businesses.
