                    Residential parking permits

Parking permits are available in some areas for residents of eligible properties without off-street parking, who need to park on the street for longer periods.

The City of Melbourne has a finite supply of parking spaces on our local streets. Permits do not guarantee parking availability, but instead help to balance the local parking needs of residents, business operators and visitors.

                    How residential parking permits work

Residential parking permits are only available if you live in an eligible property in a specific area covered by the permit scheme.

Permits do not reserve a parking bay or guarantee parking, but instead allow you to park your car for longer than the time limit shown on specific parking signs.

Permits have an area number specific to the immediate local area. You can only use a permit where a parking sign says ‘Area # Resident Permit Excepted’. Not all parking spaces within permit areas provide this exception.

                    Neighbourhoods with parking permit areas

City of Melbourne has three neighbourhood groups where parking areas allow extended parking time for residential parking permit holders:

                    • Carlton, North and West Melbourne
                    • East Melbourne, Kensington, Parkville, Southbank and South Yarra
                    • Parkville Gardens.

Each neighbourhood group is divided into specific, numbered permit areas.

You may be eligible for a permit if you live in a property within a permit area.

While your property may be in a permit area, your eligibility may depend on the type of property, when it was built and whether your property has space to park your car off-street.

You can only use a permit where a parking sign displays an exception for residents.

                    Simpler parking in the city

Good parking management helps keep our city moving – and our plan to make parking simpler and fairer will unlock hundreds more spaces, provide free 15-minute parking and introduce cheaper rates for off-peak times.

The Parking and Kerbside Management Plan has been informed by the experience of around 1,000 road users and received strong support from the community and businesses – who told us they look forward to an improved parking experience in the CBD.

The final Parking and Kerbside Management Plan will be considered by Council at the 16 May Future Melbourne Committee meeting. See the final plan.

                    Central city (CBD) and Docklands

Resident parking permits are not available in the  central city or Docklands due to a limited supply of kerbside parking in these neighbourhoods.

Some housing developments in these areas have off-street parking available to residents as part of their lease or property purchase. The central city and Docklands are also serviced by multiple, high-frequency  routes and  to provide alternative transport options.
