Works to fit out narrm ngarrgu Library and Family Services started in early 2023 and are now complete.

Informed by community consultation and our Future Libraries Framework 2021, the design of the new library and family services spans over three storeys of the Munro development in the heart of the Queen Victoria Market precinct.

narrm ngarrgu Library and Family Services includes:

                    • a library across three levels, featuring a dedicated children’s library
                    • a family services centre that will provide a parent room, playgroup room and secure outdoor play area, as well as maternal health consulting rooms
                    • a community rooftop terrace overlooking the market precinct
                    • a creative makerspace with access to 3D printers, laser cutters, paint booths and sewing machines
                    • two sound studios for podcast and audio recording
                    • a community study and events space, and bookable meeting rooms
                    • various artworks curated specifically for the new space.

During consultation, we worked closely with Traditional Owners and Elders to ensure the design reflects and honours Aboriginal culture, celebrates First Nations knowledge systems and welcomes the Aboriginal community.

narrm ngarrgu Library and Family Services is supported by the Victorian Government. The project received $1 million funding from the 2022 Living Libraries Infrastructure Program and $180,000 from the 2022 Changing Places funding round.

                    FAQs

What will the new library and community hub be called?

Following consultation with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation and the community, City of Melbourne has decided on the following name: narrm ngarrgu Library and Family Services

narrm ngarrgu (pronounced nahrrm narr-GUW) is a Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung word that translates to Melbourne Knowledge. In line with City of Melbourne’s Council Plan 2021–2025, the name supports our community aspiration to ensure Aboriginal cultures are central to Melbourne’s identity.

When will narrm ngarrgu Library and Family Services open?

Works to fit-out narrm ngarrgu Library and Family Services are scheduled to be complete in late November 2023.

Will construction impact nearby residents and businesses?

We expect minor disruptions, such as temporary road closures and noise disruptions, and will inform nearby residents and business of disruptions before they occur.

                    Has the community been consulted?

Yes. Community consultation ran from 25 January to 6 March 2022, with the final concept design endorsed by Council in August 2022.
