                    Lonsdale Street Greek Precinct greening

City streetscape at night with lights of passing cars
City of Melbourne has created an inviting and functional space on Lonsdale Street with new cafe screen planter boxes and an improved footpath.

Lonsdale Street hosts the Greek Community of Melbourne’s Antipodes Greek Festival each year. With stalls, entertainment, performers, food and children’s activities, the celebration attracts large crowds from across the city. These street upgrades will ensure Lonsdale Street continues to provide a functional space for this year’s Antipodes Greek Festival in October 2022 and for celebrations in the years to come.

The upgrade enhances the visual appearance of the area and provides an open space for traders to set up dining facilities. The existing trees have been given improved permeable paving around the bases providing them with breathability, better water flow and room to grow.

This project was funded by the Melbourne City Recovery Fund. The works started early June 2022 and were completed by mid August 2022.

                    The works included:

                    • removing five existing cafe shelters
                    • repairing broken bluestone pavers
                    • reinstating Hellenic Greek edge stone pavers
                    • installing new stainless steel planter boxes with lush greenery
                    • installing new irrigation systems for the planter boxes
                    • installing permeable paving system around tree bases.
