Cheap parking on offer to bring back the buzz

Media release, Monday 5 July 2021
Discounted parking is being offered to encourage more Victorians back into the city to bring back the buzz and support jobs.

Parking for school holiday attractions like Winter Village, Truffle Festival and Imaginaria will be cheaper thanks to big parking discounts on offer from Monday 5 July.

$5 parking deals will be available on weekends and after 4pm on weekdays across 33 Wilson and Secure Parking car parks until 22 August, by pre-booking parking online or via an app.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp said discounts from car park operators was another way to encourage more people back into the city.

"Every extra person that comes into the city provides an opportunity for local traders who have just been through the toughest trading period in decades," the Lord Mayor said.

"We want to bring back the buzz to Melbourne because a vibrant and busy city means more customers for businesses and more Melburnians in jobs.

"With so much happening, it's a perfect time to come in and enjoy everything our city has to offer.

"There are so many events and activities for families to discover in the city over the school holidays, like the Winter Village at Federation Square, Truffle Festival at Queen Vic Market, and the Imaginaria play experience at Docklands."

The City of Melbourne FOMO Freebies campaign is live until Sunday 18 July, providing people with the chance to enjoy quintessential Melbourne experiences, including staycations at The Westin or Sofitel Melbourne, as well as attractions like the Queen Victoria Market and the hit Broadway musical Frozen. All giveaways are announced ahead of time via @WhatsOnMelb social media accounts.

The five-day Firelight Festival is also back to turn up the heat in Docklands this month, transforming the area with flame jets, fire twirlers and flaming sculptures from Wednesday 21 July to Sunday 25 July. Tickets are free.

City Activation Portfolio Lead Cr Roshena Campbell said cheap parking would be an important boost for city businesses after four lockdowns.

"We know some visitors, especially now, prefer to drive into the city. Creating transport options that are easy and affordable provides support to our retailers and restaurants," Cr Campbell said.

"We know we can't do this alone, so it's great to see parking operators coming to the party by providing some much-needed discounts."

Diners have also been filling restaurants, bars and cafes across the municipality, taking advantage of the delicious Melbourne Money initiative.

With 20 per cent back in diners' pockets when they spend between $50 and $500 (incl GST) within the municipality, it's no surprise that 50 per cent of the $8.4 million joint fund with the Victorian Government has already been exhausted.
