About the Amendment
The City of Melbourne has recently completed the South Yarra Heritage Review, the most thorough and comprehensive review of heritage in South Yarra since 1985. The Review largely focused on previously under-protected interwar and post war places. A Thematic History and Aboriginal Cultural Values Assessment was developed through consultation with Traditional Owners.
Recommendations in the Review sought to give individual heritage protection to 16 new places, the addition of 2 brand new heritage precincts, the expansion of the existing South Yarra Precinct (HO6), and changes in heritage category or address for 351 places. This complex Review process ran from 2020 until 2022 and included the assessment of over 800 places.
Interim Controls
Interim heritage overlays are proposed through Amendment C425 to provide protection while permanent controls are progressed. C425 includes the application of individual Heritage Overlays to 4 places, applying the Heritage Overlay to one new precinct (Yarra Boathouses Precinct), revising the boundary of one place (Hoddle Bridge) and extending the boundary of South Yarra Precinct (HO6).
Amendment C425 is currently under consideration by the Minister for Planning.
Current Status
The Amendment was authorised by the Minister for Planning on 22 February 2023.
Exhibition for the Amendment closed on 24 April 2023. Submissions are currently being reviewed and management's recommendations will be presented at the Future Melbourne Committee later in the year.
