                    Southbank's urban forest

A healthy urban forest plays a critical role in maintaining the health and liveability of Melbourne, by cooling the city, supporting the health and wellbeing of urban dwellers, and providing habitat for native birds and pollinators.

In 2014 we worked with the local community to develop the Urban Forest Precinct Plan for Southbank. To help us co-design the plan for Southbank, 90 community members participated in a workshop and a further 50 people shared their ideas on Participate Melbourne.

Through this engagement process, the community created a vision for Southbank’s future urban forest, defined the future character of the urban forest in Southbank and highlighted areas that should be prioritised for greening.

The Southbank urban forest will have water sensitive and innovative green corridors for pedestrians and wildlife that integrate the public and private realm.

A network of diverse and vibrant public spaces will provide an immersive, sensory experience at street level and from above.

                    Precinct plan

The precinct plan was endorsed by Council in 2015 and will guide the planting in Southbank streets until 2025. Through the implementation of the plan, Southbank's tree canopy cover is expected to increase from 14 per cent to 29 percent, with the main canopy growth in street areas.
