                    Road works, driveways and drainage

You must get permission or approval to do work that may impact assets we manage. This includes roads, drains, footpaths and kerbs.

If you want to dig or do service works anywhere in the road, you must get consent for works. This used to be called a road opening permit.

You must tell us if you want to:

There are also special requirements for boundary traps and connections to fire services.

                    In this section

                    • Boundary traps and fire services

There are special requirements for boundary traps, and if you want to connect your property to fire services.
                    • Consent for works (road works)

City of Melbourne is the coordinating road authority for local roads within our municipal boundaries. VicRoads is the authority for freeways and arterial roads.
                    • Footpaths, roads, kerbs and channels

You must get our permission and consent for road works before service works or excavation of any part of a footpath, road or kerb and channel, including parking bays and bicycle lanes.
                    • Stormwater

Our stormwater drainage infrastructure is designed to protect private property and public infrastructure from flooding and provide clean stormwater discharge into our waterways.
                    • Vehicle crossings (driveways and crossovers)

A vehicle crossing is a section of paving that connects the road to private property. Vehicle crossings include the part of a driveway that crosses over public space to reach the road. They usually cross a nature strip or footpath.

                    • road markings
                    • street furniture
                    • tree plots
                    • public lighting.
