Michael Prior is an artist and teacher living on Wurundjeri land along the Merri Creek working with sculpture, sound and generative composition.

Emphasising play and world-building, Michael's practice is focused on creating immersive environments for an audience that includes young people and those of diverse backgrounds. His compositions utilise natural forces such as gravity and incorporate natural rhythms such as the movement of the sun.

Michael has held solo exhibitions at the Heide Museum of Modern Art, Gallery 9 and the Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung. In 2015 he was the recipient of the Incinerator Art Award: Art for Social Change.

Michael is a founding member of experimental Melbourne art collective Tape Projects which operated from 2007-12. He has worked regularly with Lachlan Conn as Chronox, exhibiting at National Gallery of Victoria, MONA FOMA, and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art.

                    What to Expect

What to Expect is a sound-based walking game for all ages.

                    • A sound world unfolds as you explore real space.
                    • Geo-locating software composes in real-time.
                    • Multiple layers and multiple players.
                    • Your phone stays in your pocket!

What to Expect is a sound-based experience that runs from an application on your phone. Walking, rolling, or dancing through space creates an endless sound composition.

The experience is situated somewhere between Pokemon Go, a guided meditation, and an ambient sound work. Somewhere between a treasure hunt, a radio play and GPS voice navigation software. It is kind of a game, kind of a map, and kind of an instrument.

What to Expect is geo-spatial. When you’re in the experience, sounds that you hear kind of emit from virtual objects in real space, of all different sizes, shapes and textures.

In a working demonstration for Android, sound is made from single words, phrases, environmental recordings of weather and animals, and musical elements. Some are manipulated and abstracted.

The intention is to engage multiple local writers and sound-makers to compose specifically for this format – where sections are mapped to physical locations. The work is scalable and adaptable to a multitude of spaces.
