Megan Hunter's work is grounded in environmental activism, often referencing the ocean, waterways and their creatures.

Megan is a contemporary artist in residence in Footscray Community Arts’ ArtLife program, which supports artists with disability to work towards high impact public projects.

Megan uses bold lines and vibrant colour to explore her connection with the climate crisis and Australian wildlife. Her work has featured in group exhibitions including Sometimes I Just Miss Hearing their Voice for Due West Arts Festival, 2019. Megan's sound art practice has led to tours through China and Hong Kong with ensemble, The Amplified Elephants. She has been involved in several public art projects and exhibitions with Jolt Arts and Footscray Community Arts.

                    Pathway to Water

Pathway to Water is a series of five vibrant colourful paintings highlighting the importance of our natural waterways. The works celebrate native Australian wildlife and encourage others to care about environmental sustainability. The paintings will use colour, patterns, textures and depictions of underwater creatures to activate the walking path along the Maribyrnong River.

The artworks will be installed in cut-out sections of the path and replaced with a soft fall rubber flooring product spread over a 400-metre distance. Each work will reflect Megan’s paintings and will allow passersby to step directly onto the work.

The artworks will encompass the dynamic energy of the intricacies of the local waterway and will encapsulate the environmental context on which they are positioned. The project draws on the historical and environmental context of the area, connecting audiences with the rich heritage that surrounds them.

Megan’s abstract symbolism and unique style will be supported using high-quality materials which are durable, sustainable and locally sourced.

The installation will be a constant and thought-provoking reminder of how we all need to take care of the environment and protect Melbourne’s waterways.
